In Memory of Aaliyah
By: Frank KurtzDate: Monday, August 27, 2001
Sadly, word came over the weekend of the demise of 22 year old singer-actress Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash along with eight others. The singer was returning from a music video shoot in the Bahamas when the small plane she was in had engine problems, eventually crashing.
For genre film fans, Aaliyah, whose real name was Aaliyah Haughton, made her acting debut in 2000's ROMEO MUST DIE, starring Jet Li. Upcoming unreleased projects featuring the singer-actress include QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, in which she played the title role, and the two MATRIX sequels.
There's no word on if Aaliyah wrapped her footage in the MATRIX sequels, in which she plays the human Zee.
Her albums were AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER (1994), which went platinum, ONE IN A MILLION (1996) and this year's self-titled AALIYAH. The singer also won a Grammy for the song "Try Again" off the latter album.
Our sympathies go out to her family and friends, as well as those of the eight other victims.
