In Memory of Dan DeCarlo
By: Rob AllstetterDate: Thursday, December 20, 2001
Dan DeCarlo, creator of JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH and CHERYL BLOSSOM, died on Wednesday morning of an apparent heart attack. He was 82.
DeCarlo came out of the military in the '40s and soon got a gig drawing humorous comics work for Timely, which later became Marvel Comics. Eventually, he found himself at Archie Comics where he drew virtually every character the company had, creating JOSIE (using his wife's name) along the way.
Other work by DeCarlo included a series of KOOL-AID MAN comics in the '70s as well as a number of issues of the giveaway BIG BOY comics.
More recently, DeCarlo had been involved in a legal battle with Archie Comics over the rights to his creations. His JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS dispute was being pursued up through the Supreme Court.
During the past year, after being dismissed by Archie, DeCarlo had been working for Bongo Comics, Claypool and DC Comics.
Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
