Almost any concept can fly with the right script, direction, actors etc. Right now there's a movie out called Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Who would have predicted THAT? I haven't seen it so I can't tell you if it's good or not, but Rob gave it a decent review so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.
I don't think I've ever read an issue of Metal Men, I only know about them from guest spots in other books. But the idea of a movie about a team of robots who fight crime has a certain appeal. If you add in some musings about the nature of humanity (can a sentient robot be called a person and should they have the rights of a human) it could be good. Blade Runner and the new Battlestar Galactica explored such themes to good effect.
This is not a movie I've been aching to see, but if done right it has potential. I'd give it a shot.
Wyldstarr: I completely agree. Where is Aquaman and Wonder Woman? I would think they would be all over making films out of those characters.
I don't get it, why does it have to be one or the other. WB/DC reportedly have writers working on WW, Flash and Aquaman scripts. It isn't like there's just one single writer, then I'd agree to focus on major players but that isn't the case. They can develop multiple properties at the same time.
Didn't Marvel start with Blade? Yeah it was a licensed property and not Marvel Studios itself behind it but my point is it doesn't have to clash with other films.
Besides we don't know if they're planning on integrating their universe ala Marvel or just sticking to individual properties.
What I'm thinking is they may integrate some properties and leave the major characters alone to carry on their own franchises. Hopefully they'll spell out their plans at Comicon
Hey @Zillaman, I liked a couple of those too but we're the only ones. It's not that they don't make good rentals but here's my point. This "golden age" of comic movies IS finite. Right now it seems like everything comic sells but that will not last forever. I would rather see Hollywood focus on good ideas that will prolong the life of the genre. I know that they'll never disappear entirely but someday, genre flicks will be like westerns and mob flicks are now; one or two a year and you're lucky if they're any good. Let's get the titles everyone wants like Flash, Deadpool, and Justice League made. Then we may still have time to get to the good "B" list like Suicide Squad and Doom Patrol. Making MM just takes oxygen out of the room for better projects.
The more I think about this, the more I realize how cool this movie could be. Yes, it is probably even more of a chance that this will be lame, but as for now, I'm all in wanting this to happen. However, that doesn't mean that I expect it to...
I find it odd to refer to all comic book movies as a genre. In my mind it is no different than calling movies based on books as a genre or films based on video games as a genre. True, when we think of comic book movies we first think of super-heroes. But consider: good or bad, all of the following films were based on comic books (some of these have been mentioned already):
Constantine, Whiteout, Roat to Perdition, A History of Violence, Virus, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (I guess they are kind of super-heores), V for Vendetta, From Hell, 30 Days of Night, American Splendor, Sin City, Ghost World, Faust: Love of the Damned, Hellboy (this might be debatable as a super-hero film), Red, 300, The Losers, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, The Gene Generation, The Surrogates, Men in Black and Wanted (yes, the comic was super-villains so this one is also debatable).
There is a wide variety of genres in there and I there are others that I am either unaware of or didn't count because they were based on manga.
I don't think super-heor films are going to be going away anytime soon. Especially with the numbers the really good ones get.
As for a Metal Men movie? I remember reading a few issues when I was a kid and wasn't particularly interested in them or the concept but it might make for a good film. I wil wait for an official announcement. It can hardly be worse than Steel, Catwoman, Superman IV or Batman & Robin.
I'll give you this @SinisterPryde; you're right, it can't be worse that Batman and Robin. That would defy the laws of thermodynamics.
this sounds wayyy to cool. im in. i like comic book unknowns. @reek, there are 4 movies in your list of 20 that you mentioned there that i like. man, i remember the Swamp Thing when it came out i was 12 y, old. lol. and the comics on the Swamp Thing just crazy. back then it was cool, i guess it can be cool again given the right script and director,.. MIB , has similar aspects like howard the duck did. wow i feel old now. Barbwire, Dylan Dog, and all the rest jeeeshhhh , is like going back in time here. to bad that most of the comics named here turned out just Awful, when they could have been good. fuck it' remake them all, yes even HTD''....
