MGM has acquired the right to to Richard Matheson’s classic story “The Shrinking Man”. Their plan is to update the story and bring it to a whole new generation. Matheson originally had his story adapted into the 1957 movie The Incredible Shrinking Man (original teaser trailer below).
This would be the latest Matheson story to be adapted by Hollywood. I am Legend was made again into a film in 2007 starring Will Smith. The Hugh Jackman robot boxing movie, Steel, was adapted from one of Matheson’s classic Twilight Zone episodes.
Richard Matheson and his son will be adapting the story for the screenplay.
“The book, written when atomic-bomb fear ran high, centers on a man who is exposed to radiation and insecticide and begins to shrink. The Mathesons will modernize the story to reflect advancements such as nanotechnology”. Read the full story here on THR.
Personally, I have been a huge fan of Matheson’s written work. His movie adaptations are fine, but never compete with his books. In the right hands, as it is with anything, this could be a welcomed update.
