Toy Maniac reveals Mezco’s new Cinema of Fear

Mezco’s awesomely popular line of horror stars returns with some classics heroes, by that I mean villains, and a few new twisted characters set to join the already impressive lineup. Making their debut at the 2009 International Toy Fair in New York were new Freddy Kruegers, a new Leatherface from the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and plenty of Jason Voorhees from all the different Friday The 13th films. The blood will run in 2009 and Mezco does not disappoint.

Cinema of Fear:

The Cinema of Fear line continues to grow and this year will encompass the 1/18th scale (3.75 inches) versions of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Leatherface. The 1/18th scale figures may be smaller than their larger counterparts but Mezco has kept all the details and articulation the same. Jason Voorhees has a machete, ax, and removable mask. Freddy Krueger has a removable hat and garbage can lid. Leatherface comes with his trusty chainsaw and mallet. Each figure comes packaged with its own display base. Check out the gallery for the complete line. I have included a picture of the exclusive Toy Fair 2009 glow in the dark masked Jason (look for them on eBay).

In the fourth series of the Cinema of Fear 7 inch line there are two favorites and a new character to the line. There is a surgical Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 5. 2009 clearly belongs to Jason Voorhees as yet another Jason figure will darken the toy shelf. Finally the Cinema of Fear line will add another heroine to line with Debbie turning into a cockroach from A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 4: The Dream Master. I bet Brooke Theiss never thought she would have an action figure of herself, especially one that looked like this.

There will also be two new classic style Freddy Kruegers in the Cinema of Fear line. One is a 9 inch stylized Freddy where the other is a deluxe 12 inch Freddy that celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of A Nightmare On Elm Street. Freddy will have nearly a dozen points of articulation. He’ll also have a real cloth, film-accurate sweater. Under the sweater are the souls of Freddy’s victims imprisoned in his chest. Freddy also features a miniature of the marionette as seen in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

MEZ-ITZ:

According to Mezco, they were ones that started the trend of Japanese style vinyl figures in America long before Hasbro debuted their Mighty Muggs. Mezco’s MEZ-IT’s have been around since 2002 and they started the line with the classic rap group RUN DMC (seen here). The line has included characters from Alien, Army of Darkness, Robocop, Hellboy and Dick Tracy. This year a new Hellboy will join the line as well as tributes to Frankenstein and Dracula. Please note these are prototypes of the next characters in the series.

THe Wolf Man:

Last July at the San Diego Comic Con, makeup effects wizard Rick Baker premiered footage and a trailer of the new Wolf Man film (see my SDCC Wolf Man coverage). The film was then slated for an April release. After Comic Con it was pushed to the summer of 2009. Well now the Wolf Man himself, Benicio Del Toro, has pushed the film back to November of 2009 as to not interfere with his other film Che (Part 1 and Part 2). That is apparently the story as to why there is no Wolf Man movie for the spring or summer of 2009. Though the fall seems more appropriate, it better be worth the wait.

What makes it even tougher is that Mezco has to hold off releasing the Wolf Man figures to the public (fall of 2009). There are both 12 inch and 7 inch figures for the line and bloody and non- bloody variants (see gallery). The 12 inch bloody Wolf Man figure is my pick for the best figure of the 2009 Toy Fair. I have cleared a lot of space for that one. Hurry up November!

I will definitely make room for the 12" Wolfman and Freddy dolls. My Cinema of Fear Jason is lonely.
