According to Variety, MGM TV has commissioned an animated series based on Mel Brooks' 1987 SPACEBALLS movie. The exclusive rights in the U.S. have been sold to Comcast's G4 cable network.

Encompassing a one-hour pilot and 13 half-hour episodes, the project represents the first scripted series greenlit by the new TV division at MGM, led by Jim Packer, president of the worldwide TV distribution group.

Brooks and Thomas Meehan, who co-wrote the movie with Ronnie Graham, have penned the one-hour pilot, and Meehan will supervise the writing of the 13 half-hours. Brooks will do two of the voices, President Skroob and Yogurt.

Germany's Berliner Film Companie will provide the animation.

The series is set to kick off on G4 in the fall of 2007.

I would have loved this back in the day, but it should be good since at least they have Brooks reprising his roles....."All hail President Skroob!"

Wait, no I didn't.

I hated "Star Wars".

(Except Episode One. Jar-Jar saved the show...)

I'll tell you what movie they should make into a cartoon...

"Road House".

The best movie about barfights ever made...

...plus, I star in it.

Wow ... much like the original Spaceballs was many years too late to be anything but a stale corny parody of Star Wars (Mel Brooks' standard operating procedure), an animated version several years to late to seem even slightly relevant to the recent past of Star Wars mania. We're all a little burned out on this subject and in a normal downturn in the cycle of interest for any parody material from Star Wars to seem funny, so this is greenlit (I realize it isn't Mel doing it himself, but again, typical of his projects). I love Mel Brooks a ton, even saw Life Stinks in the theater and convinced myself for years that it was hysterical, but Brooks has had an annoying habit of being waaaaay behind the curve in parody targets for the past 25 years. Remember Men In Tights being like 4 years after Prince Of Thieves and Dead And Loving It being a bunch of years behind Dracula? Ina day and age where South Park can tackle a current event in 3-4 weeks, a Mel Brooks movie tackling a subject 5 years after it was hot is a little too Weird Al for me. Like if we aren't careful, he might do a Titanic movie soon.

So I guess the venom I had for the original Space Balls (corny and juvenile, making a 1979 strip of Dave Berg's "The Lighter Side Of ..." in MAD Magazine seem like Team America: World Police) is why I think this cartoon is a simply mind-bogglingly dumb idea.

Boy, I hope they slip in some dick jokes and make fun of Jar Jar Binks. That would be side-splittingly hee-lar-ious!

I enjoyed the movie but this will be lame.

Hey Dalton, I thought you'd be bigger...
