MGM Wins Bond Court Battle

    April 04, 2000

MGM has won the long-running legal battle with screenwriter Kevin McClory over James Bond. In a decision handed down Friday in Los Angeles, U.S. District Court Judge Edward Rafeedie dismissed the last remaining elements of McClory's claim that he was the creator of the 'cinematic James Bond character.' McClory, screenwriter of MGM's 1965 James Bond film Thunderball, claimed that he owned rights to the cinematic character created by novelist Ian Fleming, and that MGM and Danjaq -- the company that has produced James Bond films -- 'infringed (his) work by continuing to release James Bond films featuring McClory's character.' Rafeedie disagreed and dismissed McClory's claims 'with prejudice,' meaning that McClory cannot try to reassert the claim.---Hollywood Reporter
