Microsoft testing the waters for Xbox 2?

CNN Money's "Game Over" column is breaking news about what they believe Microsoft's Xbox 2 may be like. According to the site, Microsoft has been "quietly conducting studies on the consumer appeal of a hybrid device that would play both PC and Xbox games," and that the unit is being referred to as "Xbox Next PC". The device would be backwards compatible with Xbox games as well as next generation games and PC games, come with Windows, a CD burner, DVD player, hard drive and built-in Xbox Live capability. The price being bandied about in the case scenario was $599.

When asked to comment on the surveys, a Microsoft spokesman said that the idea of a PC/Xbox hybrid is just one of many possible ideas the company was considering.

CNN Money also reports that the Xbox Next PC may not be ready in time to become the Xbox 2, but that it may roll out at a time after the next gen Xbox arrives. According to the website, Microsoft has been telling its game partners that the launch of Xbox 2 will arrive sometime next year.
