The Mighty Mugg line is growing like wild fire and the retail stores have taken notice. Toys R Us, Target and even toy retailers such as Entertainment Earth have gotten into the craze by offering exclusive Mighty Muggs. Exclusives are a double edged sword in my opinion. If the exclusives are short in number a collector might have to pay out the nose for one if they don’t learn about it until later. Then again exclusives mean odd characters and fan favorites get a chance to exist where in the normal market they wouldn’t. At the International Toy Fair in New York, Hasbro made a big announcement in their Mighty Mugg Star Wars line. In the fall of 2009 all Star Wars Mighty Muggs will be exclusive to Toys R Us. Until this happens Target is jam packed with their own line of Mighty Muggs. Unfortunately, I could not find a definitive list or listing of these exclusives on the Target website. This really comes as no surprise since I searched their site for a 1:18 scale Biker Scout and Speeder Bike Target exclusive back in 2000 and found nothing. I thought I would see if Toys R Us had such a listing for their exclusives and again nada. If these retailers are going to have exclusives they need to get on board and make it easier for collectors. Entertainment Earth, a site for collectors, makes it really easy (see here).
The Target Star Wars exclusives run the gauntlet of the Star Wars universe. Clone Troopers, especially the red and white Shock Trooper, are populating the shelves. It’s great that they have included characters from all three original movies and not just the new trilogy. The bounty hunter Bossk is a great addition and a character that you normally wouldn’t see in a broad release. However, the best example of this is Biggs Darklighter; Luke’s friend that flies with him in the attack on the Death Star. The character is on screen for about ten minutes but for this fan Biggs’ death is a huge turning point for Luke. Check out the gallery for all the Target Mighty Mugg exclusives.
Currently Toys R Us does have their own exclusive Mighty Muggs line. They are for the Marvel Universe and are character likenesses of the Punisher and Jigsaw (see galley). Good luck trying to find them and happy hunting!
Toys R Us EXCLUSIVE WATCHMEN:
In my attempt to buy a Rorschach DC Direct action figure I came across the Toys R Us exclusive version. Toys R Us has a Rorschach with out his mask on. At first I thought the concept of this figure was a really cool idea (see Watchmen Toy Column). After seeing him first hand I think the action figure stinks. All they did was change out his head. If they really wanted to do it right they should have made a Walter Kovacs in a prison outfit and had him come with a French fry basket. This figure should have at least come with both heads or had been the original Rorschach figure. Oh, by the way Toys R Us, it isn’t really that exclusive when you can buy it on Entertainment Earth.
NOT A REAL ACTION FIGURE, YET:
The Star Wars line is finally starting to run thin. Then again as soon as I think that they release five more characters I have never heard of. Over at /Film.com (see full article here) this little gem appeared and I thought it was worth sharing with you. If you think about it, why hasn’t there been a Force figure yet? It is probably only a matter of time before we see a clump of Midi-chlorians in a tiny package.
WTF G.I. JOE:
Since picking up my Flint in Cobra disguise figure a few weeks back I have been constantly giving the G.I. JOE toy racks a look. To my surprise I found the M.A.S.K. (an acronym for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) logo in the top corner of the package and saw that the figure was named Matt Trakker. M.A.S.K. was a cartoon from the eighties and supported its own line of action figures and vehicles. It is not connected to G.I. JOE in any way, even the figures were different sizes. The M.A.S.K. line was like Transformers and G.I. JOE mixed together but why it has become a part of the new G.I. JOE is beyond me. The true shame is Matt Trakker comes alone and doesn’t even have Thunderhawk, his flying Chevrolet Camaro G3. Hasbro had no list or dates for additional figures from the M.A.S.K. universe.
"Oh, by the way Toys R Us, it isn’t really that exclusive when you can buy it on Entertainment Earth"
I think as a columnist, if you're going to make a sarcastic comment, you might want to do your research. The Toys R Us version has a beat-up paint scheme on the face and comes with the Walter Kovacs prison nameplate, the Entertaiment Earth is just the regular unmasked version. Your Welcome.
The Matt Trakker figure was nothing more than Hasbro testing the waters to see if bringing the M.A.S.K. toy line back would be a viable idea. It was simply an easier way for them to do it by putting him in with the JOE line, which I don't think he's all that out of place IMHO. Now if they tried a relaunch of Visionaries and threw the Knights of the Magical Light Logo at the top, then I could see the argument. Judging by the backlash they received from GI JOE fans I seriously doubt they will do anything more with it. It's a shame, although he didn't have his correct vehicle with him the M.A.S.K. line would have looked great in this scale. This is exactly why companies don't like experimenting with concepts like this. Fan boys complain endlessly about Hasbro cranking out the 500th Darth Vader figure that looks the same as the last 489 versions but when they try and do something different, the same fan boys crucify them for it. I'm not talking about you specifically Robert, but I have heard this same story on so many different boards since they released that figure it's not even amusing any more.
Agree on the Rorschach figure though, he should have been in his prison suit. Changing up his paint scheme slightly and putting on a different head is just plain weak on DC Direct's part. On the other hand I guess we should be thankful that we're getting Watchmen figures. Hell, years ago I would have been happy with any version of Rorscach.
........strangely I don't find myself attaracted to the Mighty Mugg figures at all.
batman2040, good eye. I just saw the same figure and didn't even notice his accessories were different. Today I saw the same figure at the comic shop too. WOW a name plate variant! That is like Hasbro making a Boba Fett with circles on his gloves then half circles on other Boba Fetts. Big FRAKING deal, I believe was point.
Movielord, I agree that the Prison Suit would be 1000 times better. And I agree that it isn't all that different, but I was just trying to get across the point that it's not the same figure as the Entertainment Earth figure, so the statement that "it isn't that exclusive" is incorrect. As a columnist he should just make sure that any statements made should be accurate.
I gotta' say, what the hell is up with all of the mighty mugz/superhero squad/minimate crap? The vinyl figure trend needs to die, and goofily proportioned unarticulated cartoony crap is just eating up development funds that could be used to produce good figures. Minimates wouldn't be so bad if they were scaled to be used with Legos, but as they are, they're little square guys that aren't really good for anything. They're pointless. With companies like Hot Toys making huge strides in realism and articulation and accessories why waste precious resources shoveling out crap like Mighty Mugz?
I had a little extra cash this month for my "toy fund". I took my daughter over to Toys R Us today and of course she cleaned up. I however, who was not all that fond of the Diamond Select 1/4 scale Darth Maul, ended up purchasing the DS 1/4 scale (Hoth) Han Solo. Once I got him out of the package and on the shelf, wow. He is a spectacular looking figure and a fine addition to any Star Wars collection. Good articulation, quality clothing, nice details and a sharp likeness.....and for $80, watch out Sideshow. Just don't leave him packaged up in that box, he has to be *gulp* removed to enjoy properly.
Yeah, I saw the Darth Maul. I wasn't all that impressed with the head sculpt. I already have a Sideshow 1/6 scale Maul anyway. Same thing with the 1/4 scale versions of Windu and Ben, not all that impressed with the photos I have seen. Maybe the final product will be better. I did see a photo recently of the upcoming DS 1/4 scale Luke from ROTJ and I will definitely be adding that one to the collection. The other problem is the 1/4 scales will not fit into my generic Ikea display cases. Shelf space outside of those is getting to be a premium. There is also that 1/4 scale Kirk coming as well.........my wallet weeps.
