The comic book website Newsarama reports that an ongoing fourth Spider-Man comic book series will launch next spring from the creative team of writer Mark Millar and artist Terry Dodson. Millar and Dodson last collaborated on the first title released by Marvel's Epic imprint, TROUBLE, the final issue of which just went on sale.
The editor of the new Spidey book, Axel Alonso, explained how Millar and Dodson's book will stand apart from Marvel's other SPIDER-MAN books, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN and SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, by presenting the character in a more realistic, gritter fashion. "If you're a guy who swings around in tights and fights similarly clad guys who are sometimes ten times as strong as you, you're going to get the occasional run in your stocking; you're going to spit a tooth or two into your sink," explained Alonso to Newsarama. "Mark wants to remind readers of this, underline the risks that Peter takes when he goes out at night, the nicks and cuts -- physical and emotional -- that he brings home with him. It's no small thing what this guy does night after night."
While the new book is at present still untitled, it will fall under the Marvel Knights imprint line, already noted for its more film noir approach to the company's characters.
Millar promises a wide variety of superpowered guest stars will appear during the book's first year including the X-Men, Cloak and Dagger, Black Cat, Electro, The Vulture, Doctor Octopus and the Avengers. "This is my first real step into Big Boy's Marvel and so I'm really pushing every button, playing with every toy I've ever wanted to play with," Millar added. "This is very much Spider-Man's story and I've put everything into it through sheer enthusiasm for the character and his own personal history within this complex, fascinating backdrop he lives in."
