Frank Darabont appeared at the Comic Con 2007 to talk about his upcoming horror film, THE MIST, another Stephen King adaptation. He previously adapted King's THE GREEN MILE & THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. Leading actor Thomas Jane and Darabont along with cast and crew showed up to give more details to the movie which hits theaters November 21, 2007. They also showed a clip of 3 guys in a grocery store arguing over who goes out into the "mist". One unlucky guy gets pushed into doing it and when he opens the shutter to look out into the misty streets, a very large tentacle grabs him. The other 2 guys try to pull him back in but they can't match the strength.

While talking to the audience, Darabont said the movie would get a "hard" R-Rating. The Creature Effects' guru, Gregory Nicotero, described brutal death scenes and lots of blood taking place in the film.

The Mist is such a great story. It does not need to be made into a gore-fest. The whole point in the original story was that you never really get to see whats going on.

I am not famillar with "The Mist", although is sounds awfully similar to "The Fog".....I enjoyed both Fog movies, so this could be good, plus I really dig Thomas Jane and of course Frank Darabont has a fairly good track record apapting Stephen King movies.

I'm fine with this... An R rating means that they will amp everything up. The Mist is my all time favorite Stephen King Short story, I can still remember reading it for the first time just after Jurassic Park was released and thinking that this could be done on a simular scale and be twice as scary and tension filled. I agree though that the hidden element is what really builds that tension though...

I can understand an R-rating. The Host got an R-rating, and it's not a gorefest, but a hard-R is something different. The Mist isn't Grindhouse or Hostel or The Hills Have Eyes, and shouldn't be if they want to be a decent adaptation of the story. I mean, the entire point of the mist in The Mist was to obscure everything so that you can't see anything. People would leave, and you could only hear screams, or whatever. It was left up to the imagination.

That said, I'm looking forward to the shot where they drive under 'something' that walks over them, and can only see the legs. It's the one image that sticks in my head to this day.

Well, all of Darabont's work with King's writing have been awesome. Green Mile and Shawshank were great movies without destroying King's writing...so I expect that The Mist will live up to those standards. I do understand that the film will some some kind of resolution (versus the book's, and in the interest of not spoiling it, I won't say how it ends). I don't mind a little gore and if it takes an R rating to tell this story as it should be told, then so be it. I'm glad to see Frank won't be selling out for a lower rating just to appeal to the Hollywood money machine to sell tickets.

I read the Mist when he first published it along with a bunch of short stories and I absolutely loved it. I too agree that this is his best short story. It is nothing like the Fog and it so far beyond it. I have been waiting for it to be made into a movie since I read it. I have no problem with a hard R rating only because I trust Darabont to do it right.

I've missed this one...and I'm a fan of Steven King...so I'm guess I have some required reading to do....I did hear here that Insomnia is going to get done...so that's a plus...and I have read that one...which was a great story

Hey, Darabont! Write the "Cell" adaptation too!

They should be able to save a lot of money on special fx! Foley should be interesting.
