Miyazaki's Ponyo Theatrical Tops 10 Billion Yen
By: Chris BeveridgeDate: Friday, August 22, 2008
Hayao Miyazaki's latest film in Japan, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, has passed the ¥10 billion ($91 million) mark in its theatrical run. This marks the first film to reach this record since Miyazaki's last film, Howl's Moving Castle, was released in 2004 and it did it two days faster than that film. Ponyo will be getting a wider viewing next week when it's shown at the 65 Cannes Film Festival according to ICv2.
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is Miyazaki's ninth theatrical feature and is another of his collaborations with Joe Hisaishi. The film doesn't have a US release date yet but speculation is that it will get a limited showing at the least in order to qualify for the Academy Awards in 2009.
