So long Mary Jane, we won't need you messing up the intricate webs of Peter Parker's hormones. So says Sony Pictures with their planned reboot of the Spider-Man saga. After a decade of seeing Sam Raimi's vision circle around the webslinger and his iconic girlfriend, Heat Vision reports that producers and director Marc Webb will be meeting with some young female thespians this weekend for the chance to star opposite Andrew Garfield in their remake of the classic comic hero. And those actresses won't be trying out for MJ.

Beyond saying that Jane isn't the character vying for Peter's attention, the trade doesn't specify whether this weekend's audition is for Gwen Stacy (played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Raimi's Spider-Man 3), Black Cat's Felicia Hardy, or some new character that piques the love interest of Spidey.

They do say who's in the running for this new role though and it's not the previously rumored Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Instead, it's being reported that Imogen Poots (Fright Night), Ophelia Lovibond (Nowhere Boy), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Lilly Collins (Priest) and Emma Roberts (Scream 4) are all set to try out for the mysterious new part.

We have pictures below so you can speculate on whether it's Gwen Stacy or the Black Cat being cast this weekend. And when Sony confirms the casting, we'll update this of course...

Ophelia Lovibond

stan lee had been quoteed as saying that he origionaly wanted qwen as a love interest for a love triangle between her and mj- but the but the idiots of sony are jerking themselves around to think that they can completely ignore her

Not sure I'm happy about no MJ. In fact, I think I'm unhappy about this. But I will, of course, reserve final judgment until I see the movie.

Well that's a mistake.  Hey let's make him gay and muslim instead!  That should appeal to people.

It's not MJ I want out of Spidey's life... it's just Kristen Dunst that needs to go.... I'm not really all that upset about this... in the comics MJ came along late in the game, Raimi brought her in first then introduced Gwen later... Wasn't that a mistake???  this doesn't mean that Spidey won't end up with her, it just means he hasn't met her yet... they can introduce her later...   I'd like to see gwen come first then they can off her like in the comics... that was a great story line.

Since it's a reboot of the franchise how about we start off right, go by the comic and make Betty Brant his first gal. We can bring Gwen in the sequel. Besides Peter meets Gwen in college and from all reports he's in high school here. I know these facts won't get in the way of whatever the studio wants to do but that's my vote anyway. And we can work her brother's death into the film just to be thorough and add a little bit of that love/hate thing between her Spidey and Peter

It could also be Betty Brant they want to use first.

Hobbs 8/20/2010 6:49:44 AM

That's the problem wise, is this a reboot?  That info has been kind of foggy lately.  My money is on the Black Cat.  Though I'm okay with no MJ as a major role I don't think it would be wrong to introduce her seeing what a big part of Parkers life she was even before they hooked up.

An involved love interest only leads to the sort of lazy Hollywood storytelling we got in the first three Spider-Man movies. There is no reason the female lead needs to be kidnapped or even threatened by the villain of the story.  They manage to avoid this cliche' in the comics all the time.  Screenplay writers adapting comic books just don't seem to know how to avoid it.  A scant few have managed it, but most just go with the Hollywood formula.

Movies with Kidnapped Female Leads- Jonah Hex, The Dark Knight, Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Constantine, Batman Forever, Batman, Superman II, Punisher: War Zone, Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man, Blade.

When writers want to avoid kidnapping the girl, they usually just opt for the abduction of children instead.

Movies with Abducted Children- Batman Returns, X-Men 2, Elektra, The Punisher (1989).

Wyldstaar, they've also used the clihe of the hero revealing his identity to someone. Usually it's been the love interest or the main villain. Only Superman Returns didn't do this and the Dark Knight.

Just looking at the ladies I'd say they're casting Gwen. If this is the case, I'm glad about it. As much as I enjoyed Raimi's movies (well, SM# not so much) I never understood why MJ was his first love and not Gwen. Raimi liked the classic Spiderman tales and I just figured he would use Gwen. If the new SM movie is going to be a reboot then bring Peter and Gwen together. I still want Gwen to die because second only to Uncle Ben's death, Gwen dying was extremely important in forming Peter's character. Cast Imogen for Gwen and save Emma to reintroduce MJ in the second movie. In the third movie kill Gwen and have MJ there to help Peter pick up the pieces. If they are casting Felicia Hardy as Hobbs suggested then I would probably cast Palmer.
