Just a few weeks after director Robert Rodriguez confirmed that they have finished a first draft and secured financing for a Sin City sequel, Heat Vision is reporting the helmer and his Sin City partner Frank Miller have brought in an Oscar-winning screenwriter to touch up on their story. The trade reports that William Monahan (The Departed) is coming on board the fast-tracking production and will be working with the recent draft that Miller turned in. They hope to launch shooting by the end of the year.

When asked about the long-awaited project back at the beginning of the month, Rodriguez responded with:

"Sin City 2 is going good, we're just finishing the script for that, we already got the money. We have everything we need so we can just start shooting as soon as we get the pages. And it's the same thing for Machete 2. We've already got the budget, just waiting for the script. As soon as we're finished writing we get to start the shoot."

Back at the SDCC event, the helmer revealed the title to be Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, based on Frank Miller's storyline by the same name. We know that Mickey Rourke's Marv and Jessica Alba's Nancy were featured in that comic but it was (and still is) too early to reveal any casting information. Rodriguez also announced in Hall H that the sequel would feature two new stories set within the confines of Sin City, one of them titled The Long Bad Night.

One of the stories is suppose to be original so maybe this is an admission that Miller is a horrible screenwriter and they don't want a spirit debacle on their hands. They are obviously taking this seriously by hiring Monohan. I love just about everything he's been involved in, this, hopefully can only be good news.

One of these days, after Nolan's Dark Knigh runs it's course, you WILL see a film adaptation of Dark Knight Returns, and then, once again people will line up to proclaim Frank Miller a genius.

The first film was ok. I bought it but only watched it once. Am I missing something? I thought there was a Dark knight returns animated on the way though, I think that would beat a live flick version hands down.

Well Tallman, the quality of a live action DK returns would largely depend on the casting, but Miller's story would be compelling in either format.  For my money, the distopic Gotham of the near future would make for an awesome (Blade Runneresque?) visual environment.  The biggest difficulty I forsee is casting another Joker.  Ledger's performance will make it hard for anyone else to try for at least a few years.  Imagine though what casting opportunities there could be with an elderly Joker and Bats.

actually reek- millar has done a few short stories in the sin city universe- i cant remember all of them but I do remember one in which the sin city girls are able to catch a killer who prays on them and uses Miho to help kill off the shmuck... I cant remember but the long bad night may have been one of those short stories.

Remember that the first sin city had 3 stories in it as well and a dame to kill for is just one. Maybe they are adding the other two to keep things going the way they have.

tallman- a batman year one animated movie based on millar's work is supposed to come out soon but there is no word yet on a dark knight returns though that would be a great one to see too.

Reek who isn't saying he's a genius? I have followed his work up to all star batman and robin, which was also terrible, but I even plan on checking out his new book Holy Terror which is coming out this next year that was suppose to be a follow up to TDKR (now is a stand alone story). A comic genius yeah, a screenwriting genius I think not. Did you see The Spirit? Hands down one of the top ten worst movies I've ever seen in a theatre man. And supposedly Miller was a die hard fan of the comic. I've read spirit and I say he pretty much single handedly ruined the character to break out into a medium other than comic books and graphic novels. Miller just doesn't seem to understand the language of film. I actually thought the first sin city, though I enjoyed it, could have benefited from a good screenwriter catering some things to the film versus the comic. Monohan is the perfect guy to do this for the second one. Maybe this one will be even better.

Yeah shac, The Spirit sucked rancid cheese, but that's one movie. Like with anything, there's a learning curve. You can't condemn a body of work based on a few bad outings, otherwise Joel Shumacher wouldn't even be allowed to go to the movies let alone make one.  And for Calibur, no idea what you're talkin about dude, I never said anything about Sin City short stories or anything like it.  My only point is that Miller gets bagged on as a bad writer mainly because of The Spirit, but whenever DK returns gets made, we'll all be reminded how talented he is.

the problem with the spirit is miller directed

sorry reek that first coment was meant for shac because of the whole touching up the script thing my mistake dude. Its possible that the origional shortstories that millar wrote will be weaved into the new movie. to coincide with how the first one was done

tallman 8/29/2011 6:16:25 PM

@reek now you put it like that, yeah your'e right it would be pretty awesome but the casting would have to be spot on. I just think with an animated version it could be done shot for shot with no messing you know? Which could include Superman, Twoface Selina Kyle bla bla bla and not look too overcrowded as it does in live films.

@calibur I can't post links on here for some reason but if you google the dark knight returns animated, I found a couple of reputable sites have listed it to be realeased 2012 through Dc animated.

Either way I wouldn't miss it for the world.
