Mondo: Jurassic Park Vinyl Soundtrack Review

Art and Music!

Once again, a Steven Spielberg and John Williams’ collaboration took the world by storm. In 1993, Jurassic Park tore apart the big screen and set a new precedent for special effects and summer blockbusters. Many would say that the effects in Jurassic Park are still unsurpassed. That is an argument for another time. We’re here today to talk about another form of artistry.
Mondo, the incredibly awesome and difficult to acquire art design company, has released a limited edition Vinyl LP of John Williams’s classic score. Dan McCarthy has designed two very unique LP covers with a mutual design that lays within. The brilliance of Mondo taking on LP designs is that it appeals to a very eclectic group of movie fans. Everyone loves a good movie poster and, hands down, Mondo’s are the best. With an LP, the artist now has a wider range of concepts and designs, the very best of which Dan McCarthy has designed for his two different Jurassic Park covers.

The best thing about designing an LP or a poster for a beloved classic, such as Jurassic Park, is that the artist is free to do anything. When the film initially comes out, marketing takes over and a branding occurs. It has to be instantly recognizable and contain no spoilers. Often, it is the little details that stand out in a film. That shine, years later, is what makes a film become a part of our pop culture. McCarthy’s Amber Vinyl for Version B is a stroke of genius. The colors are better for Version A and the Dilophosaurus variant, but with the mosquito placed in the center, perfect.
Version B is the definitive collector’s piece. The T-Rex skeleton and the Amber LPs give you a starting point for not only the story, but a foundation for imagination. It is scary that we are only a few steps away from making Jurassic Park a reality. Thankfully, next summer we will get another reason why it shouldn’t become a reality in Jurassic World.
My only negative comment on the entire release is that this is not the complete score of John William’s Jurassic Park. Mondo’s is the original soundtrack as it was released in 1993. Last March, for the 20th anniversary, there was a digital release that included 4 additional tracks. They were: “The History Lesson”, “Stalling Around”, “The Coming Storm”, and “Hungry Raptor”. These tracks can be purchased here

If I had a record player I'd probably buy this, it being my favorite sound track ever along with Braveheart.  I used to listen to the CD everyday.
