In our continuing series of actors owning up to bad comic-book adaptation, Jamie Lee Curtis has come out to Contact Music against her 1999 Dark Horse Comics feature Virus.
"It was maybe the only time I've known something was just bad and there was nothing I could do about it," Curtis said. "I just do the best I can and there have been bad movies that have been wildly successful and great movies that have tanked, so you never know. It was an independent precursor to all of these Marvel comics movies. I thought maybe that fan base would show up for it, but no."
The film, based on Chuck Pfarrer's comic of the same name, focuses on an extra-terrestrial intelligence that arrives on earth and begins controlling machines with the intent of wiping the planet of the viral disease known as humanity. The movie also featured William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland. It was directed by James Cameron protege John Bruno, who has never directed a feature film again.
And in our 13 years of covering comic book adaptations we have to admit that Virus may, in fact, be the worst one. Yes, worse than Batman & Robin. With a poor script, bad acting and terrible special effects Virus couldn't even rise to any semblance of "so bad it's good." It's just banal and bad.
Or as Jamie Lee Curtis puts it: "That's a piece of s**t movie. It's an unbelievably bad movie; just bad from the bottom."
Latino Review brings a translated report from Fotograms.es that a new mutant has joined the cast of Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class.
According to the report, actor Álex González is in the movie playing the mutant called Riptide. The character was famously part of the mutant-killing Marauders team, who are lead by Mister Sinister.
The movie is currently filming in London with location filming happening throughout the world. It's due in theaters June 3rd of 2011.
In other First Class news, the Georgia website Jacksonville.com reports on locations being scouted in the Peach State. One primary location of interest is Jekyll Island. The advance crew for the film have been talking with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Jekyll Island Authority and other agencies on permits and other requirements for filming on the island.
Previous reports indicated that the crew was also interested in Tybee Island. All the interest in islands has us wondering if they may be looking for a stand-in for Muir Island, as we've heard that Dr. Moira MacTaggert is in the movie.
Reportedly the X-Men crew aims to begin filming in Georgia in October.

Not only does actor Edward Norton bear no ill-will towards Marvel over the decision not to keep him on as Bruce Banner in The Avengers or future Hulk movies, but he also told MTV Splash Page that he's totally cool with Mark Ruffalo as his replacement.
"Mark's one of my favorite actors and a very good pal of mine," Norton said to MTV. "We've already been laughing about it."
The pair also have ambitious plans to form some kind of project featuring a unique cast.
"We could get Lou [Ferrigno], Eric [Bana], me and Ruffalo," Norton laughed about his dream project.
Still there's one question remaining about the whole Ed Norton and Hulk equation. Whatever will MTV Splash Page talk about with Norton next time they interview him?
Collider has revealed a set of promotional posters from Smurfs, Spider-Man 3D and Men in Black III. Although the Smurfs posters utilize artwork from the now-filmed movie, the other two are just logo-centric images that may or may not reflect the ultimate design of the upcoming productions. Frankly we're hoping for a new look for Spidey, as the promo poster just continues the tired font work from the previous movies.

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!, an all-new animated series featuring the best of the best in the Marvel Universe, premieres Wednesday, OCTOBER 20 (8:30 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD. Produced by Marvel Animation, the series stars the world’s greatest heroes — Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, Ant-Man/Giant Man and Wasp — who form the Avengers, a team assembled when the powers of a single hero are not enough to save the world.
Beginning Wednesday, September 22, Disney XD, DisneyXD.com/Avengers, Marvel.com, MarvelKids.com and Disney XD Mobile will roll out 20 micro-episodes introducing the team’s core members. Each five-and-half-minute episode focuses on the back story, allies and nemeses of the heroes before the Avengers were formed.
In the two-part series premiere, “The Breakout,” Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Wasp have defeated some of the most dangerous Super Villains on the planet. But when the Super Villain prison system mysteriously shuts down, chaos is unleashed on the world. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes must now band together as the Avengers to protect the planet from the threats that no single Super Hero could face alone. Their first task is to try and stop Graviton, a being whose power dwarfs anything ever seen. He’s after Nick Fury, but will destroy the world to get to him. io9 has a chat with the producers of Batman: The Brave and the Bold who reveal lots of cool stuff from the upcoming season. Items of interest:
Thanks to CaptainSigma for the submission.
Cassidy Freeman, who plays scheming Lex Luthor stand-in Tess Mercer on Smallville, answers fan questions about season 10 in this video segment:
A resident of Manchester has uploaded a series of videos showing the dressing of the city street for filming of Captain America: The First Avenger. Crews were tasked with converting the Dale Street to a World War II era avenue in Brooklyn.
While there's no action or actual filming contained in the videos, the filmmaker here has added some helpful titles to point out exactly what has been changed to downgrade Dale street.

Love that Cassidy Freeman, nothing beats a sexy redhead. I too think Tess is good heart, just a bit misguided
I want to see some real action out of the Capt.America set, wake me when that happens
I remain cautiously optimistic about First Class considering everything.
I didn't even know Virus was based on a comic. Maybe all the fans did show up afterall I'm sure there weren't many. Oh and btw I enjoyed the movie as sort of a B sci/fi monster movie.
Oh and yeah, enough about Norton already. Like Cheadle said, "It's me, I'm here, deal with it", or something like that
Is the Smurf in one of the posters giving New York City the middle finger?
About the Norton/Hulk thing: I too don't care any more. I would watch the "dream team" movie. (Even if it's a Jane Austen adaptation...)
Avengers Toon: How can they have both Ant Man and Giant Man? Where's Yellow Jacket? Still, the toon looks good.
So you don't post the last Cap set video but post these? Slow news day?
Maybe Scott Pilgram will get some love on disc.
X-men: just keep posting pics of the white queen, that all we really want to see
The Virus comic was something like 4 issues from Dark Horse. It was written to serve essentially as a published storyboard for the movie. I don't think it translated well into film. I liked the comic a lot back then, but the trailers had me avoiding the movie like the plague.
I still find a live-action Captain America hard to swallow. I mean as bad ass as he is in the comic books, it doesn't translate very well to live action cuz he's still a guy running around in American colored tights with a gigantic shield which is pretty ridiculous in real life no matter how you shoot it.
But I hope they can do it well, and i hope we get to see multiple decapitations from a single shield throw!!!!! ...... ya right.
Very much looking forward to seeing The Avengers toon and Scooby-Doo on Brave and the Bold.
