More Genre Goodness on the Way

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Sunday, February 25, 2007

Super Heroes, science fiction, and horror are all the rage these days, and that’s a really good thing.  More networks are picking up new shows within our genres of choice than ever before.  I thought I’d take a look at some of the series we have to look forward too.  Most of these series are in production and I couldn’t get start dates for them yet.

Them

Them is directed, at least initially, by Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3) and centers on an agent responsible for investigating an alien that has infiltrated the human race and that might be a part of an alien sleeper cell.  Now, this is a twist on the whole terrorist thing!  The only casting I know about so far is Rachel Nichols who last played one of the most waste of space characters on Alias

Mars

This series is actually a remake of a British television series set to air on ABC where a car accident mysteriously sends modern day a police detective back to the 1970’s.  Rachelle Lefevre has been cast for the series.  She most recently appeared in What About Brian.

Reaper

In this series debuting on CW a 21 year old slacker learns that his parents sold his soul to the devil and he now has to work for Satan retrieving souls lost from Satan’s domain.  The first episode is being directed by Kevin Smith.  Let’s hope it stays on schedule better than Kevin’s Spider-Man/Black Cat crossover comic for Marvel.  This ones being promoted as a daramatic comedy.

Area 52

Area 52 is an NBC comedy about government employees that happen to work in a remote Nevada facility that houses an alien creature.  The most notable casting news for this series is the addition of Mathew Lillard who’s recently done some funny stuff for Robot Chicken and American Dad.

Demons

Demons is a drama coming to CBS set around a group of exorcists and others who investigate supernatural occurrences with a focus on one particular ex-priest.  The series features Michael Perrineau (Michael from LOST) and Ron Eldard (House of Sand and Fog).

Journeyman

This new NBC series feels too been there done that, but we’ll just have to see if it rises to the top.  The story focuses on a man who travels back in time to help people.  Hey is this Quantum Leap, nudge nudge.  The series features Kevin McKidd (Dog Soldiers) and Moon Bloodgood (Day Break).

Pushing Daisies

This ABC series follows the exploits of a man who has the ability to bring dead people back to life.  The series stars Lee Pace (The Good Sheppard) and the debut episode is being directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

The Bionic Woman

The cyborg is back an reimagined for a modern age from one of the producers of Battlestar Galactica.

Amsterdam

This new series from FOX centers on a cop who is hundreds of years old.

Twilight

CBS is bringing us this series with a theme that’s been really done to death.  The show is about a private detective who is alos a vampire.  I’ll just watch those Angel box sets I’ve been meaning to get around too.

Eli Stone

A legal drama where an attorney begins to believe he is a prophet due to the visions he has started having.  Imagine that, an attorney with delusions of grandeur.  This may be more like a reality series.  The upcoming ABC series stars Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) and Victor Garber (Alias) in his second attempt to get into a new series after Alias.

Babylon Fields

CBS brings us this strange sounding comedy series in which dead people in a post apocalyptic world return from the dead and try to resume their lives.

Sarah Connor Chronicles

This is a no-brainer that actually may be coming out a bit too late.  This FOX series is based on the characters from the Terminator franchise.  Sarah and her son try to survive in current time Los Angles and fight attackers from the future.  The series stars Lena Headey (300), Thomas Dekker (Heroes!?!), and Summer Glau (Firefly, The Unit, and The 4400, wow does she stay busy!).

As far as this week’s series I’m really excited for Prison Break.  I must hear what’s on this recording that could exonerate Linc.  Also, finally this week we get some more super group action on Heroes as Matt’s team forces some information out of HRG!  LOST is also on my list because I feel like the previous couple of episodes have really been building to something and these episodes have really stepped up the quality compared to what we were served in the first half of the season.

Monday

PRISON BREAK (FOX, 8:00pm PST) “Wash”

Michael and Linc finally hear the information on the tape, Sucre and Mericruz finally reunite, and T-bag visits a psychologist.  C-Note has made a dal with Mahone to give up Linc and he begins working on that.  I always hated C-Note!

wow, didn't series 2 of Life on Mars just start? and they're already doing a cross pond remake?

the first series really was something else, heck, I'd be happy to see them just broadcast it over here, no remaking necessary.

Wait a second, Mania just announced a movie being produced on the Area 52 comic book - and now there's a different Area 52 on the schedule as a new TV show? I'm guessing one or the other will go through a name change before all is said and done.

Sounds like a decent slate of upcoming genre shows. Granted, most of the concepts cover ground we've seen before, but it's the execution of the shows that will determine whether they are fresh or cliched. Hopefully there will be at least a few that are good and one or two of those few that will survive to a new season.

What's up with the CW repeats of Smallville and Supernatural? This coming week makes sense because February sweeps will over by then - but last week's repeats were still within the sweeps period. It's considered madness to run repeats during sweeps - makes me wonder if the production companies are running behind schedule.

I like the fact that genre shows are more in demand, but unfortunately it gets them spread pretty thin.

Why does everyone have to be a PI? How about a show where vampires are evil and we leave it at that? Maybe a vampire who is a crime scene investigator? Or a DA? Or stranded on a deserted island? You get the point, let's just see something with a different twist.
I watched all of seas 1 of Life on Mars, and I loved it, it had a very strange nostalgic feel to it. If they keep it that way and portray '70s America as well as they did '70's Britain, it could be great. Imagine a modern cop caught in the pre video cam police work of the '70s! This could be like reinvisioning Starsky and Hutch! In this case I'm all for it.

Assuming all these series make it into production, I give 3-4 a chance of actually being around more than 1 year.

PB is steadily losing me, the side storylines are weak and I think they need to look at wrapping the series up after next year.

Reaper sounds a lot like The Collector and Brimstone. On top of sounding like Angel, Twilight also sounds a lot like Forever Knight.

Life on Mars was picked up by ABC about 2 weeks after the British Primere. Calling it Mars is a bad idea through and is doomed to fail. Plus series 2 is the last season of the British show so it's never too soon.

Captmathman • Feb 25, 2007, 09:33pm •
#3 - How about a vampire who has to break out of prison? Or is a brilliant diagnostician, but only during the night shift?
Life on Mars will bomb here. The British version is good cop/bad cop, writ large. An American version will come off as too hokey, unless it's done very carefully. Odds are that it won't be.
Them sounds like a reboot of Invasion. Will lightning miss twice? Probably.
Other than that, I'm anxious to see what's done with these shows. Hopefully, lots of good competition will result in a high-quality "cream of the crop."

bjjdenver • Feb 26, 2007, 12:32pm •
lol captmathman, how did I miss that one!!

Of course the new trend would be having a vampire who is a wedding coordinator!

dragon261 • Feb 26, 2007, 01:56pm •
The title of tonights Heroes episode is Company Man not Unexpected, that was the title for last weeks' episode.

You really do need to watch those Angel box sets, mostly 'cause they're damn good. Or Damned and Good if you'll forgive the pun.

Anyway, the series gets off to a slow start but has alot of the same balancing real world and demond world comedy that made Buffy great. It really picks up in the second season with the return of someone very important in Angel's life and undeath.

And keep a particular eye on Wesley Wyndam Pryce in the third and fourth season as his character takes some dark and interesting turns.

And the fifth season as the series takes a major turn and Spike becomes a regular cast member.

Dramatic comedy and directed by Kevin Smith make Reaper sound promising.

Speaking of Kevins. I also a bit encouraged by the casting of Kevin McKidd in Journeyman. He's an excellnt actor and it's always a good sign when we get someone from the British isles on an American series. See Heroes. Or the aforementioned Angel and Buffy.

British concepts on the other hand tend to lose somthing crossing the Atlantic, and that something is usually quality. So I'm a bit more skeptical on Mars. I remember thinking two things watching season 1 of Life on Mars.

1) This is a friggin awsome series.

2) Only British televsion could pull this kind of thing off.

I continue to stand by those thoughts.

How 'bout a vampire who runs a tanning parlor, or a tropical Island Resort. SPF 3000.

Or Vapire geneoligist.
