Variety has confirmed the weekend announcement of Paul Verhoeven taking over the directing duties for THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2. Along with the director confirmation, they also confirmed that Rene Russo (seen on the left) will not be returning for this sequel. The film will feature an uncast character named Nadia Badri as the new female lead. Pierce Brosnan stars as the returning Crown character and will produce alongside Beau St. Clair and Dino Conte.

As far as plot concept and settings, the follow-up is set in Europe and the Middle East and centers on Crown, who becomes entangled in a centuries-old feud and must decide how much he's truly willing to risk for love.

Monica Bellucci(spelling?) would be nice if they planned on staying with the "older" broad route

No Rene Russo, no interest.

Ever since Rene Russo got plastic surgery, I have trouble watching her. That's all I think about. I liked the first movie, but I was so distracted by Rene's face job I would rather she be replaced in the second one, quite frankly.

I'm not sure why the absence of Rene Russo's character is a make or break in seeing the sequel. That would be akin to the absence of Bonnie Bedelia in Die Hard 3, and her absence certainly didn't hurt the film. After all, the film is called The Thomas Crown Affair, not The Catherine Banning Affair.

Having said that, I have no desire to see this film since the demand for a sequel isn't there. The first Thomas Crown was a solid, stand-alone film. No sequel needs to be made. The plot for the second film doesn't even strike me as a strong story either, which could hurt the film even more. Add to that Paul Verhoeven as a poor directing choice, and you've got a flop of a film.
