More Sequel & Comic Franchises

Jake Coyle with the Associated Press wrote up a decent look at the state of the industry and what they're thinking in terms of all these sequels we're currently seeing. By the end of August, we will have seen 14 sequels hit the theaters this season. That really does say it all in terms of what studio executives are thinking these days and future "trends" inside the movie release market. In the piece by Jake, a couple of quotes are thrown around for possible future sequels on the way..

Quotes about a possible Transformers sequel, quotes about SPIDER-MAN 4, X-MEN 4, a SILVER SURFER spinoff, etc..Obviously, this isn't flashing news as most of it has been reported before...

Still, I'll provide you guys with the link from his editorial.

Let us know your thoughts on which franchises shouldn't be touched, which should die & which franchises should be looked into by Hollywood.

I'd rather have fresh sequels, than crappy remakes any day.

shouldnt be touched:(shouldnt be remade) anything from 1970 to present, including movies from the last 10 years. Any John Carpenter movie.

remake movies from the 30's and 40's that arent available on DVD anymore so that we get a fresh spin and package them with their original counterparts on DVD.

should die: Highlander sequels, Garfield sequels, Wrong Turn Sequels, movies that were cute cartoons in the '60s like uh, Underdog, Rocky and Bullwinkle.

franchises that should be looked into by Holywood: (uhhh... hmmm...)
BUCKAROO BANZAI vs THE WORLD CRIME LEAGUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My view is that the trend of today's movie is, regardless of what the movie is, if it makes money, they will make a 2nd one automatically.

More and more studios are hoping to create franchise for longterm revenues instead of a one time movie who is great and makes some money.

For the remakes themselves, I'm always disapointed when I hear news on which movies will get remake. I always feel like the original is better and that X studio is only remaking a movie just to ''freshen'' the movie for a new audience. Most of the time, these remake sucks big time. Some of them can and will be better then the original but still, why remake it? Why not leave what is a classic movie from the last decades and remake it just to make money?

With today's technology, many old movies would probably look better then the originals but still, that's what makes the originals better. Because they were done with a certain restriction but left so much to think with our imagination.

In the end...nothing we say or do will change these studios, many things will get remade and the classics will ''die'' over time.

@ jedibanner

It seems to me that a lot of actors are contracted for 3 movies these days. I know the kids from Spider-Man were contracted for 3 movies.

However, nobody except Peter Jackson and Lucas planned 3 from the start; there must be a clause in the contract that says if the first one makes x% profit, then 2 more will be made.

It always seems to be 2 more. We had a quick 2 more matrix, 2 more pirates, 2 more spidies, 2 more x-men, 2 more terminators etc.

@ mckracken that's a good idea to remake movies from the 30s and 40s. I think it would be challenging for today's production team to modernize movies from back then. I am certain there must be some decent film back then that needs improving.. it's just probably not remembered very well so maybe producers need to do some digging.

I guess that's the idea Newro.

Now, when an actor/actress signs on for a movie, it's already ''planned'' for them to be included for a sequel if the studio makes anough $$$.

So, when we watch a movie, we almost have to keep in mind that if the movie will make money, BAM, for sure there will be a sequel.

It almost takes out some elements of surprise when we watch a movie since we almsot have to remind ourselves a sequel will happen.

Myrddin, make that 15, you left off The Bourne Ultimatum.

And it could possibly be 16 if you count Daddy Day Camp.

I would like to see a X-men 4. They left us hanging with Prof, X and I'd like them to tie up some of the other crap they did.

Myrddin,

"Surf's Up" is not a sequel.
