mlaforce: If you saw Thor, avengers or capt america, you would know that thor comes from asgard, which is not of earth.  all those movies have items or specifically referenced asgard as other worldly.  in thor's world (universe or realm) there are the nine realms which this new movie deals with. so basically it fits in the avengers universe perfectly. asgard is not earth's past it's another realm.

To add to more to the miaforce responses, that's the way it was in the Thor comics I read when I was a kid in the late 80's/early 90's...they had a very medieval-like setting, only the characters were superhuman, firing out concusion blasts that could level buildings and uprooting full grown oak trees and swinging them at someone else.
