The Halcyon Company has bought out all rights to the TERMINATOR franchise from Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna. Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson will co-produce a new series of films based on the character.

A script for TERMINATOR 4 by John Brancato and Michael Ferris has been written.  It was designed to be the "first leg in a trilogy."  Moritz Borman will produce. T4 is planned as a summer 2009 release.

Kubicek and Anderson  hope to pump fresh blood into the series with new characters and plots.

Borman told Variety, "With T3, we included many incidental details and plot points that, along with the main narrative, set the stage for an entirely new set of inter-related stories covering the future adventures of John Connor and the Terminators. This new Terminator trilogy will build upon the already huge worldwide Terminator fan base, which was both revitalized and expanded with the global success of T3."

Dave's Take:

T3 did for the franchise what Phantom Menace did for Star Wars: It made a lot of money, and everyone thought it sucked.

James Cameron is a tough act to follow. Only his involvement would give the franchise some new-found credibilty.

"...which was both revitalized and expanded with the global success of T3."

GLOBAL SUCCESS OF T3?
um I'm sorry but for all intents and purposes, T3 was a rehash of T2 with an expanded ending.
T3 is to T2 what Escape from LA was to Escape from New York.... a remake disguised as a sequel.
good luck.. they'll need it... i hope they didnt pay TOO much for all those rights!

BRING IT ON!!! i thought T3 was fantastic. I loved the new approach on it. T1 & T2 are classics, but it did get a little preachy and whiny in there, so I thought that they decided to make it that you can't change fate, only postone it was excellant. The story was actullay very good in T3 if you go back and watch it again. Was it perfect? Far from it, but I think they could mkae this into a very cool franchise. And as far as people saying T3 i a remake of T2, I beg to differ. Totally diffrent feel and story. I think they should just stick to all robots now, no human actors to be the bad guys. Just show life after Judgement Day. I mean, I love the fact in T3 that his mission was to ensure the survival of John Conner, so he told him to go to that underground base, not to stop Judgement Day, just in order for him to survive. Very Cool ending.

T3 was a pretty good three movie. It is good compared to say Superman III, Jaws 3 D, and a lot of other three movies. However, it was not the classic that T1 and T2 were. I am willing to give future Terminators a chance.

I have no problem with this at all. The major dissapointment to me about the third film was the lacking of a seeming cohesive story. All I wanted out of the third one was an enjoyable ride, I did not expect it to be any better or even in the same league as the originals. It failed to me.

If a fourth film is made that expands upon that then perhaps the third will gain some more credibility in my mind, but until then...who knows. Cameron is indeed a hard act to follow, but there are plenty of up and coming action filmmakers that if given a shot could make something absolutely awesome.

I fear that there may not be one of them in the line-up for the movie though.

I really liked the third movie. Of course it was not good as T2, but it really was probably superior to the first, which hasn't held up very well over time. How can you not like a movie with that BLEAK an ending? You have to respect the fact that Mostow did not cave into a studio executive demanding a happy ending.

I thought the 3rd film was a great sci-fi story, the kind we RARELY get to see in a big budget film.

And it neatly tied up all those paradoxes and plot holes left in T2. (note - I love T2, but it has huge story problems)

All new people working on this could bring out some really cool stuff. I'm more interested with this direction than if Cameron came back or they continued off of 3 with the same crew.

I'll wait for a trailer and some more info, but for now my curiosity is piqued.

I have a really cool idea for a Terminator film that I think should be obvious, but no one has touched on it yet...not even close!!! If the producers want it, contact me!!!

PS-As far as the first Terminator not holding up over time...it just needs a Special Edition version with new added and refreshed special effects. With a fresh re-fit, I think all of your concerns will be easily addressed. The fact is, the first Terminator had the best story and acting of all the films. That said, it only had a 6.5 million dollar budget...even low for its time. A redo of the FX will cost the whole budget, or more, of the entire first film...but it will be well worth it...and I'll tell you, I'd go and see it at the theatre and buy the DVD!!!

It's not just the special effects that don't hold up. It's really the story. Terminator was great when it came out. I honestly just think it isn't as compelling as the sequels. And we've been spoiled by many superior sci-fi movies in the intervening years.
