ABC has announced that the series LOST will offer 17 hours per year for the 2009 and 2010 seaon -- not the previously planned 16 hours.
The network added two hours to the show's production plan because the WGA strike knocked three hours out of the current season. To partly compensate, the network recently added an additional hour to Part 2 of the season finale that airs May 29th.
LOST co-creator Damon Lindelof said in a statement, "We were supposed to do 16-16-16. But we ended up doing 14 this season, so we owe two." He went on to add there will be an action-driven cliffhanger instead of the mind-bending flash-forward time shift that stunned fans last season.
Lindelof ruled out the show extending beyond the remaining 34-episode order.
He adds, "The finale this year will not be as tricky as last year. Hopefully, this year it's a little bit more of a straightforward action-adventure narrative. But the ending of the episode will hopefully engage and intrigue people looking forward to the next season of the show.”
Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe noted this, “Three more years is a long time, even with the assurance of a predetermined end date. Forty-eight episodes is a whole lot of story line. Also, the show will still be running the risk of wearing out its welcome, as it lingers on the pop-cultural landscape. "The Sopranos" is a good example of a series that has been so obsessed over, and so hyped, for so many years that even many fans are tired of hearing about it now that it's nearing its June end.”
