Director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) will lead the action-adventure pic Prince of Persia: Sands of Time in Morocco for producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney. The epic project is a live-action feature based on the videogame. "Prince of Persia" has a script by Jeffrey Nachmanoff (The Day After Tomorrow) and game creator Jordan Mechner. The videogame spawned six installments and numerous spin-offs, boosting Disney executives' hopes for a lucrative new tentpole.

The choice of Morocco as a shooting location will be a boost for the North African country's film biz.

"Prince of Persia" will also film in UK's Pinewood Shepperton studios. The Moroccan section of the shoot is expected to start in mid-June.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
will hit theaters July 10, 2009.

Am I the only one who cannot wait for this? This is one of the best games of the last decade. I'd really like to see Assassin's Creed adapted as well, but P.O.P. The Sands of Time was a masterpiece. I really hope the get the cat from the Tea Party to do the music as in the first game. Sands of Time has one of the most moving, beautiful soundtracks in any game ever. Warrior Within, the second in the trilogy, suffered due to an over abundance of thematically inappropriate nu-metal, and the third game was a return to form with a more appropriate score, but even after moving on to all three next gen systems, I keep coming back to that first game in the trilogy, the story, music and gameplay are that good. Do yourselves a favour and find this game on the used/discount rack at your local game retailer and see what you've been missing for the last 5 years, and maybe I won't be the only one excited about the prospect of this film.

Scythe - it's not the game's standing that has people yawning at this. Read the article - it's been a very lucrative game for its creators. The fault is not the game, it's the genre. Mortal Kombat, Doom, Resident Evil... all moderately entertaining movies, filled with eye candy, but that's it. When I shell out $8 for a movie, I'm not looking for "moderately entertaining."

Unfortunately, "moderately entertaining" seems to be about all videogame - to -movie adaptations are capable of mustering.

True the movies in this genre have tended to suck, but the story of the PoP trilogy was especially deep, and almost Lucas-esque in it's use of thematic circularity.

Done by people who care about the core material, this could end up being an incredible film.

Don't worry Sin, I'm all too aware of the horrifying lack of quality in game adaptations, and I too am sick of mediocre eye candy. Back when the first Mortal Kombat came out it was forgivable, and considering the source material that film wasn't as god awful as it could have been, but games like Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark, and Bloodrayne have good stories, but nobody in the industry wants to commit to anything more than a half-assed cash in. At least this film will benefit from a successful producer, and a competent director, which is more than can be said for any of the other recent adaptations. You're right though it's not the fault of the games, but I'd put as much blame on the chumps who keep paying to see the mediocrity that's being churned out as the suits who are shoveling it out. P.O.P. has a chance to break this cycle, we'll just have to see how the reviews turn out. You're right to keep your eight bucks in your wallet until we see some evidence that this won't suck.

Bruckheimer made me a believer with the Pirates franchise. I enjoyed every minute of that trilogy of films, even the less popular third installment. If he can get his people to work that kind of magic on an adaptation based on a theme park ride, I'm cautiously optimistic. Besides the game's creator is actively involved, so that's a good sign. I don't think any of the other recent adaptations have had that going for them. Hopefully it will help.
