MORTAL KOMBAT is Not a Sequel

Instead, it's being described by director Mink as a new "re-envisioning". While talking to Movie Hole, here's the latest on the next Mortal Kombat movie.

The status of the film, as of today, is that "...the Producers are working out their deals with the studio and arranging their financing", says the director.

mink says the project isn't so much a sequel as it is a "re-envisioning (if that is a word) of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom. Todays audience is a savvy involved group so the film must be A plus plus in every area in order to capture the magic of the first film. It is taking the entire concept to the next level across the board in every area visual design, story, cast, FX, photography and most importantly the fighting scenes. The original Mortal Kombat game was born a child of many visual loves by the creators at midway so this latest version borrows heavily from that pioneering spirit and must be thought out and executed at the highest level in order for it succeed in today's market place. This is no overnight task."

Though the IMDB has Christopher Lambert returning as Rayden, mink says casting hasn't begun yet.

"First things first, is the way these larger projects need to be done. It is still in the business stages but once that is squared away all casting options will be explored along with the continued development of the best story line."

The last we heard the film was supposed to be shot in Louisiana.

"At one point Louisiana was on the table for various reasons. It still maybe in the future if that is appropriate place to work for the picture".

I didn't even know they were making another one. I thought the first MK was a fun movie. It was done fairly well, given the source material. MK:A was just awful. I mean, what was up with those sphere things that you travel through the center of the earth in? I mean, really.... Well, I would be up for another one as long as it stays true to the game.

MK2 was horrible. I'd like to see them go back to Shang Sung instead of Shao Khan. They could use Quan Chi also to bring in something new and the Netherworld? instead of Outworld.

Maybe show the Kung Lao vs. Shang Sung batttle at the opening sequence or something and then have Liu Kang as the main guy again.
I could do without Reptile, but Scorpion & Sub Zero gotta be in it.

This will probably turn out better than the Street Fighter film using Chun Li as the main character instead of Ryu.

I've always been a huge MK fan. The first movie was good and I agree Mk:A was terrible. I just hope that a new movie will stay true to the source material. I know they will try to appeal to all audiences but I think the movie should be darker and grittier than previous movies. Maybe something along Blade2 meets Showdown in Little Tokyo meets Big Trouble in Little China. Also sprinkle a little Bloodsport on top of it and Five Deadly Venoms for desert.

Can anyone explain why Christopher Lambert was in the first Mortal Kombat to begin with?

You want to re-invent Mortal Kombat and start from scratch, fine. Build a decent plot and solid fight scenes, cool. Assemble a whole new cast who can actually act, awesome.

But who the hell is Mink??? And what makes him a good choice to direct Mortal Kombat?

In my humble opinion, I hope the producers bring in Yuen Wo Ping to choreograph the fight sequences. Sure, he's pricey, but it'd be a big step up from the silly Power Rangers-type of fighting from the previous Mortal Kombat fights.

Honestly I think Raiden should be an Asian martial artist like in the original MK game. It would only make since.

!!!!!!

I liked the first MK movie for what it was but the game was a lot more violent. MK2 burned my eyes and scarred me badly. WTF was up with the dragons at the end? They must've brought in the special-fx house responsible for Carnosaur for that mess....
ANYWAY, If they do this up right, it could be awesome. It needs to be a hard R rated flick true to the spirit of the games for it to wash away the taste of that last pile. and they better not call it:
Mortal Kombat: Requiem
..with a big red R. UGH.

Well Almostunbiased, the first movie was actually decent while the second one was so bad it made Street Fighter look like Academy Award material by a narrow margin. But unfortunately MK much like films that was intended to be more adult driven was the victim of the typical Hollywood wisdom of trying to cater to a kid appeal, even though the MK franchise was marketed to kids while being the Faces of Death of video games. But of course that was the start of the government hiting the panic button on the subject of kids being desensitized by violence. Now with theaters reinforcing the R film restrictions in theaters over the past 3 years, we're gonna get badly edited versions of films meant to be what they meant as. "Live Free or Die Hard" anyone? Bruce Willis wasn't happy with FOX making the decision to have the film re-edited in its entirety to try to pull in the kids who know have a hard time getting into R-rated films nowadays. I don't think John McClane was ever created to be the Barney of action films. If MK is gonna be done...THE RIGHT WAY THIS TIME...It needs to be done by someone who isn't part of the DIRECTOR's GUILD, otherwise the studio might push the infamous "merchandise button" to try to lure to 16 and under audience so we need need MK to be PG-13 again. Lucky for Zack Snyder and Frank Miller that they're not part of the guild, otherwise 300 might not have turned out to be the crowd-pleaser that it was.
