A man (Mortensen) and his young son (Smit-McPhee) deal with harsh times in THE ROAD(2009).

Despite conflicting reports as to whether General Zod would even be in Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot of Superman, there's a report out of the Hollywood Reporter that says Viggo Mortensen is being eyed to play the iconic villain. This latest bit of news comes just a week after it was revealed that Kevin Costner was being eyed towards the role of Jonathan "Pa" Kent in the fast-tracking Warner Bros. Pictures production. It should also be noted that the trade is playing on shaky ground here, with the only confirmed casting addition being Henry Cavill as the title character.

Mortensen and Costner are both considered just "persons of interest" for producer Christopher Nolan and director Snyder, with other names also being on the contention list for both Zod and Kent. The search is also on for three female parts as well though the trade and studio have been quiet on the roles or which actresses have been leading the casting process.

Viggo has also been recently cast in Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman so there's a question as to his availability or whether the two studios work work around each other so he can play both parts. Whatever the case, Warner Bros. Pictures has yet to comment officially on the Costner and Mortensen rumors but you can expect some official press releases out of the studio soon as production is scheduled to roll in hopes of having it in theaters by December 2012.

Yay....I guess.  Start filming and show a trailer then we'll see how my panties bunch up or not.

No Zod, please. We don't need another rehash in a Superman movie because then all we'll hear are the comparisons to Superman 2, both Lester's version and Donner's. I'm tired of all of that crap. Superman has a great gallery of villains. Why on earth would you want to use Zod yet again. It's a stupid idea that's going to haunt the success of the movie. Move beyond what's come before. Yes, I would still like to see Luthor in the movie, but only as the mastermind pulling the strings behind the curtain.

Viggo's great, but I don't want another Zod. It's a horrible idea no matter how you spin it. I thought Nolan and Snyder were smarter than that.

Many of us have posted great ideas for the movie here on this site, so it can't be all that difficult to put a great story together with the budget this movie's going to have.

Sorry, but Zod is a shit idea that's going to be the downfall of the movie.

Hundreds of comic book vilians that Supes could fight and they can't break away from Luthor and Zod.  Seriously.  Fresh take?

If it's gotta be Zod, them it's gotta be Zod.  First off, at least they are picking a villain that cam match Supes in strength and will make for some serious battle scenes, Supes can cut loose on a fellow kryptonian. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Apocolypse or Brainiac, heck even Parisyte... but Zod will suit the purpose if handled correctly.  Secondly who better than Viggo Mortensen to play him... Viggo could really put some new depth into the character... so in short I can live with this.

Team Hollywood, we've been at this for a while and there have been some great plays, like Superman 1 and 2... then we started dropping the ball, and walked away for a long time... Let's get are heads back into the game and deliver the Superman that everyon is looking for...

Seriously powerful Superman, with jaw dropping special effects driven examples of his power...

Villain with power on a similar or same level for big ass throwdown...

Great story, faithful to the comic material, yet doing something we haven't seen in live action before

My but (and everyone elses) in a theater chair opening night.

And YES... it really is that simple.

Now let's see John Malkavich as Brainiac, please and Bruce Willis as President Luthor...

I'd would probably feel the same about Zod but after seeing how they presented Zod on Smallville I am interested. Besides, I remember all the weeping and gnashing of teeth that went on when Nolan picked Ledger for the Joker, and now peoople talk of hin as the greatest thing since toilet paper. It may work. Beside, isn't the results born in the quality in the writing.

Although Zod was far from my top choice I'm still taking a wait and see attitude. We may have more villains and if nothing else Snyder should give us some pretty awesome fight sequences without that magical cape Superman threw at Non

He is Vigo!  You are like the buzzing of flies to him.

InnerSanctum 2/27/2011 5:15:47 PM

boxker:  Ledger was NOT the greatest thing since toilet paper.  He was a good Joker though.
