Mortensen Dumps Snow White

Viggo Mortensen may have chosen Superman instead.

We may have a scenario brewing where Viggo Mortensen has chosen to chase after a man of steel over that of a fairy tale princess. The trades report that talks have broken down between Viggo and Universal Pictures for their upcoming revision of Snow White and the Huntsman, a film which has Kristen Stewart locked in as the title character and Charlize Theron confirmed as the Evil Queen.

Why this is being placed under the "Comic" news section is some speculation as to why the actor may be passing on the chance to play the huntsman. An ongoing rumor has Viggo also possibly taking on the role of General Zod in Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. Pictures reboot of Superman. With both productions being being fast-tracked by their respective studios, there's been question as to whether he could find time to shoot both roles or if he would have to drop one production in favor of the other.

Naturally, with talks breaking down on the Snow White tale, speculation is running wild on whether this opens the door for Viggo to officially accept the Superman gig. We shall see soon if this scenario becomes true for comic fans.

The news comes on the same day that Lois Lane has been officially cast in the reboot. Read about that here

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

Good for him.  I was cringing at the thought that he might end up in a Red Riding Hood disaster.  This guy is just too talented to be wasted.

Still at a loss at why they are choosing General Zod if they want to break away from the previous films.  I'd much rather see, either a new character, or a classic character from the comics.  Zod was done in 2 and the TV series (both I believe.)  Move along....

What???? Zod will be in the reboot? Why? This is what got Singer in trouble by not letting go of previous Superman flicks.

From what I read Viggo was getting greedy, asking for a percentage of the movie's take.

The Zod thing is still a rumor. Til Snyder or someone high up confirms this I'm not buying it quite yet.

I'm OK with Zod. He's a badass.

I really don't know how Zod was portrayed in the comics (I assume, at some point, he was introduced), or in the Supes TV incarnations.  I just know, I enjoyed Supes 2 as a kid.  However, there seems to be a major inability to break away from the original movie franchise.  Is it possible to have a movie that doesn't feature Lex Luthor in a prominant role, or another Kryptonian?  Kind of takes away from Supes being the "last of his race".  Zod may be a rumor, but it is one that seems to be bouncing around a lot.  Enough that I would start giving it some credibility.

Zod is an awesome character, and immortalisted by Terrence Stamp in Superman II. In the comics he has been through many different incarnations dating back to the Silver Age, and recently with the "Last Son" and supsequent "New Krypton" arcs in the comics, they finally brought a Zod into the post-Infinite Crisis comics continuity who's consistent with the Superman II portrayal, which now seems to be regarded as the definitive Zod.

As for this movie though, the Zod rumour dates back to the very first announcement of Snyder as director, and I'm pretty damn sure this very site posted a quote from Snyder quite some time ago SAYING THAT THE ZOD RUMOUR WAS RUBBISH!  Now of course they may have changed their minds, but this is currently being reported like the rumour has never been addressed, and it was - in the negative - by the movie's freakin' director!

I don't follow the comic books which feature guys in tights and capes anymore (I enjoy the well made films though.)  I do have a lot of respect for comic books and the direction they started to take in the 90's.  And, I'm sure they have continued to mature over the years. Maybe because so many good writers started to deconstruct the superhero that it eventually lost its appeal (if it tells you anything, the last series that I completely read all the way through which featured a superhero was Starman.  However, that said, I was reading comics all the way into my early 30's.)   I do occasionally pick up the random graphic novel (I think the last Superman story I read was Moore's "What Happened to the Man of Tomorrow").  So, I have no idea about Zod in the comics.  If the character has evolved into something interesting...

Yet, the rumor persists.  And, that same director was photographed wearing a shirt saying "Zod Lives".  Like you said, this was announced a long time ago.   We shall see.

Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen sounds delicious.  However, if I did this movie I'd make sure she get the last laugh as Kristen Stewart just makes you want to take toothpicks to your own eyes and ears as she is the most annoyingly uncharismatic wooden actress on the market.

If viggo is in superman, I'll see it for that reason alone.
