Movie Screenshot Trivia: Rd 1
By: Jarrod Sarafin, News EditorDate: Monday, February 04, 2008
Welcome to the first installment of the Mania Movie Screenshot Trivia Game! It’s time to test your knowledge (or uber movie geek brainpower) of various cinematic moments, fellow Maniacs.
Most hardcore cinema fans have an advantage over what we normally call “mainstream” audiences in knowing certain details. Case in point, a lot of people who don’t visit online news sites or keep up to date, probably wouldn’t connect Uwe Boll while watching the Dungeon Siege trailer and they probably wouldn’t care because they’d have no clue who exactly Mr. Boll is. But hardcore fans do know that man’s resume of films and would probably warn those “mainstream” people if given the opportunity.
A few months back, after a night out on the town, we arrived home one late Saturday night with friends and Cinemax was re-airing Star Wars: A New Hope and it just so happens that at the exact moment we turned on the satellite, Luke was staring at the horizon while that powerful score of John Williams echoed across the surround sound. This spurned a conversation on the man and his various film scores when one of our casual friends asked “Who is John Williams?”
Now, to me, this question was baffling to say the least. How can someone not know who John Williams is? But the more I thought about it, the more the undeniable truth came to hit me. Not everyone knows (or cares) the same for movies, composers, directors, etc. There’s a reason why certain directors we all have grown to hate continue to get jobs in the industry after their latest project proved profitable. The average movie-goer doesn’t know much about a movie other than what they see on the trailers. They don’t pay attention to who’s directing what. They don’t care about budgets, producers, sequels, screenwriters or entertainment trivia. Sure, they know who Steven Spielberg is but they probably couldn’t pick Peter Berg out of a lineup.
But if you’re reading this, you could most likely pick him out straight away just by seeing screenshots of him, as you see with the picture on the left of this article. That’s the foundation of these screenshot trivia games.
We’re going to put up 10 screenshots from 10 different movies. Some photos will be rather obvious for you because you’re a fan of cinema and you’ve most likely seen that genre film a thousand times. Other photos may not be as obvious, showing only obscure actors that you know by face but not by name while even more may have no actor at all but only a plot device or setting inside it. Your mission, should you accept it, is to guess as many screenshots as you can for any given week.
What’s the prize? Bragging rights of course!
Rules of the game:
- I will do 2 sets for each of the 10 films. The first set of screenshots will be published on Monday mornings and each correct guess will be worth 2 points. The second set, which will be published on Thursday mornings, will be worth 1 point each. You must email me at jarrod@mania.com by Wednesday night at 10:00 pm with your answers to be worth the full 2 points. If you need to wait for the 2nd set photo before guessing, that’s fine too but remember it’s worth 1 point less. Sunday night will signify the end of that round and the winners will be announced with the next round of photos on Monday.
- Do not give the answers in the comment section. That would ruin the game for those who want to play. Feel free to discuss anything related inside the comments but don’t give away the answers.
- All answers must be emailed directly to jarrod@mania.com and the email must be titled “Movie Screenshot Game: Set 1” or “Movie Screenshot Game Set 2”. If an email doesn’t have Movie Screenshot Game (or Movie Still Game) in the title, I may just consider it spam or an email I don’t need to look at in connection with this game.
- I don’t consider googling a cheat. I want to point out that if you think you can find answers through the various search engines, feel free to try. In most cases, the search engines won’t help you unless you see a certain item, name or recognizable actor which can be easily searchable.
- We’re going by the honor system here when it comes to sharing answers with fellow players. Example, you know the top 5 screenshots and they know the bottom 5 screenshots and you both share the info with each other to have all 10 screenshots. That, I will consider cheating. It also takes away from the fun of it all so why do it? If you feel like asking your wife or friend at home for a little help, go right ahead but asking and conspiring with fellow players would go against the honor system.
Enough rules though…Let’s get on with the first installment of the Movie Screenshot Trivia Game!
