How Much Can a Good Comic Book Artist Make?
By Tucker Cummings
Source: How much do comics writers and artists make?
OverviewRates for comic book artists vary from publisher to publisher, but a great many artists make a good living as comic book artists. The happiest comic book artists are the ones working for pleasure and not for a paycheck.
New TalentA new artist will rarely make more than $40,000 a year, unless he is working on multiple books each month. An artist is generally paid a flat fee per page, and sometimes a royalty on top of that.
Star ArtistsTop comic book artists reportedly make around $500 per page; that figure varies depending on the artist's popularity and the publisher he is working for. The best comic book artists may make around $80,000 a year.
Creator-owned CharactersBy creating your own characters, you can make a great deal of money in royalties if the comic is optioned for a movie or video game or action figure.
PublishersSmall publishers can't afford to pay as well as big-name comic book publishers like DC and Marvel because they don't sell as many issues per month. Image publishes only creator-owned work, so the artist has more control.
Other Income SourceComic book artists also earn income by selling original art. Comic book artists can also generate extra income from the sales of action figures or other collectibles based on their characters, if the characters are owned by the artist.
