Verily I say unto you...

Why studios still hand out gigantic budgets like candy

(Fri 10/27/2006 02:38pm)

Because, honestly, a proven franchise, character or idea will reap the studio millions (possibly billions). Take "Superman Returns" for instance. With a confirmed budget of $260 million dollars, you'd probably think " what the hell was Warner Brothers thinking?" $260 million is nothing to sneeze at, and I'm sure it caused undo stress for lots of WB higher ups. And when domestic box office came in at $200 million...I'm sure you'd deduce WB panicked like a mofo. But this is where the all important foreign box office comes in, and with another $190 million dollars overseas, "Superman Returns" got the mother of all reprieves. I'm not sure even WB knew it'd take in this kind of money worldwide...they were counting on the domestic take to save the day.

I consider this to be a huge goof by a major studio that just happened to work out in the end...a rather large profit (but not what the studio expected) guarantees both a sequel, and the capital to pay for said sequel (and hopefully reap a higher profit as Bryan Singer delivers a more action packed flick).

Some good points on why Studios do it but there are questions as to why they DON'T do it at times..

Take the oncoming Halo Movie Franchise.

This film adaptation of one of the most popular game franchises ever will be directed by Peter Jackson(the Lotr Trilogy & King Kong)....yet studios are not wanting to:

a. Finance it at around 150 million, give or take..

b. give 19% of the profits to the creators.

It stands to reason that any franchise around Halo will or can be made into a very popular movie franchise trilogy if done correctly and PJ/FW of all people can do just that...

I think WB knew Superman would do well overseas, and they were banking (no pun intended) on that to make up for all of the development money they spent over the years. Superman is known the world over almost as well as Coke a Cola and Michael Jordan. The Man of Steel will probably have a smaller budget and a lot more action to increase its profitibility. I still don't think Singer's the right director for the project (I want Michael Bay), but I'm willing to give him another chance to deliver. Superman Returns had its moments, but was underwhelming for as long as we waited and for as much hype that preceeded it.

I'm sorry, Wess...but again, I have to disagree with you on Michael Bay. He's not capable of mature, romantic, sweet storylines.
