Thirty years after James Garner quit the private eye business, a new Jim Rockford has been found for NBC. HR is reporting that Dermot Mulroney is set to play the iconic private eye in what will be his first regular TV role.
The network's updated take of the 1970s drama will center on a Rockford who is described as "slightly crumpled, wry humored, cynical, world weary, compassionate when it's called for and easily irritated by morons."
His troubled past includes doing some time as a convict and as a cop.
NBC's "Rockford Files" was penned by "House" creator David Shore, who is executive producing with Steve Carell.
The already tried this show it was called LIFE. and they had an Irish guy playing the american. very believable accent. NBC will can it after three months. the tv execs are so spoiled. They can everything that is'nt a hit, even if it was a quality show. With that said someone cancel V. I mean sh1t you give any show that type of sfx makeover and some body will watch it. CRAP!!!
Wow...I never would have picked Mulroney to replace Garner. Garner had a large screen appeal in both TV and film. Mulroney has neither.
My interest in this series just went out the window. Good luck to everyone who is happy with this but I'll take a pass.
Didn't they get the message from the other half-dozen or so 70s shows they tried to remake?? IT DOESN'T WORK!!
I hope to hell you mean Steven J. Cannell who was the showrunner of the original because Steve Carell makes no damn sense. Also I hope Garner appears as the new "Rocky."
Hugh Laurie's accent on House is great. Not a hint of his British accent. That's what an actor is supposed to do last time I checked. You know, turn into someone else. When Hugh first tried out for the role, Bryan Singer heard him speak and thought he was an All-American guy. At the time, Bryan Singer wanted an American and thought Hugh was American until he met him in person and heard him speak in his British accent.
Anyways, I used to love the Rockford Files growing up. But Dermot Mulroney doesn't have any qualities that make him good for this role. They need someone a little more like Jeffrey Donovan from Burn Notice, but more of an a**hole.

Dermot Mulroney is bland, boring and stiff. If he was any good as an actor he'd still have a movie career. But If there's any consolation at least they did'nt go with an Aussie or a Brit using a fake generic American accent like Hugh Laurie's on House.
