THE MUMMY 3 and Summer Olympics Team Up.

While The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was filmed in China and its main characters are based out of Chinese historic and mythology elements, the news that the film is mixing with a marketing campaign alongside the Summer Olympics (which is based out of China this year) is still surprising.

Namely because the Chinese characters in the movie are villains. Then again, they did approve Universal to shoot the film in their country and historical landmarks so perhaps they don't mind after all.

But that's what's happening, reports HR. The trade has announced that Universal Pictures is teaming up with the Olympics and it
kicks-off Tuesday with an extended 150-second spot that will run during NBC's "America's Got Talent." The spot, which also will be cut into variations ranging from 10 seconds to two minutes for NBC Universal's cable networks and in-theater pods, utilizes special effects that fuse Olympic footage with "Mummy" scenes.

One such moment, the trade adds, includes a backflip by Michelle Yeoh who morphs into a gymnast on a balance beam. In another, a fight between stars Brendan Fraser and Jet Li is transported to fisticuffs in a boxing ring. The marketing campaign will begin in theaters on July 18.

The film was directed by Rob Cohen and stars Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Wong, Luke Ford and Isabella Leong.

Plot Summary: The blockbuster global "Mummy" franchise takes a spellbinding turn as the action shifts to Asia for the next chapter in the adventure series, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O'Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah). And this time, the O'Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service.

Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China's ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O'Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents.

As the monarch roars back to life, our heroes find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force...unless the O'Connells can stop him first. Now, in "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," the trademark thrills and visually spectacular action of the "Mummy" series will be redefined for a new generation.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
will hit theaters Aug. 1, 2008.

Does this mean in the new movie we'll see the armies of the undead competing in the javelin, the 300 meter dash, and various swimming competitions? Wouldn't the Yeti-creature fit better in the Winter Olympics? This sounds hokey.

We'll see soon in those Summer Olympic spots. Sorta sounds like the deals between the studios and the NBA Playoffs. They like to incorporate movie advertisements and the basketball theme together in what sometimes can be described as .....strange.

That's for sure Jarrod. This sounds sooooo gimicky. Maybe because last Olympics ratings were terrible. So maybe they figure that nobody new of them? I didn't until they were almost over. In a time of DVR's, seasonal shows on DVD, and shows being put on the net, who watches LIVE television anymore. I get my advertisment from you guys when you praise or slam a show.

While it definitely sounds hokey, reinforced advertising by association makes sense to me, because as you're watching the Olympics, you are more likely to think of the movie, or vice versa. Really, is it any different than a fast food restaurant combining their commercial with scenes of a movie?

I was already thinking of the Empire Strikes Back glasses from Burger King... of which I have about 10... in a box... somewhere... I hope.
