Mummy Joe, Babylon Butchered & Bloom Madness!

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, April 11, 2008

Welcome to our next edition of Top Maniacal Rumors of the Week, the place to cover all those wild and wacky rumors that sometimes were a bit too unsubstantiated to cover elsewhere. This week was filled with some big ones, enough so that vocal Maniacs made them known on any articles they could.

From a possible Mummy star appearing in Joe duds to a possible really big robot landing in the next Bay project to the real reason why Gough and Millar left Smallville, here’s the place to catch up.

Brendan Fraser and Dwayne Johnson in G.I Joe?

Rumor: As some of our more vocal readers are aware, El Mayimbe opened a can of ‘Gung Ho’ rumor mongering last Friday by saying that Mummy star Brendan Fraser has filmed scenes as the G.I Joe character Gung Ho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to appear as Shipwreck.

Source: Latino Review

Mania Verdict: MAYBE---We can testify that Latino Review seems to get a lot of these rumors correct and it fits that Fraser would reunite with Mummy director Stephen Sommers for a bit part. We’re leaning towards true but we have yet to see any confirmations on these points from the trades or the actors.

Al Gough Left Smallville because of a rift with leading star Tom Welling?

Rumor: Smallville showrunner Al Gough was forced out before next year’s Season 8 because of a rift between him and Tom Welling over character development.

Source: Action-Figure.com

Mania Verdict: FALSE---We can see leading star Welling wanting to establish some control on development over his Kent character and we can certainly see Gough and Millar wanting to keep control in the executive producers’ camp but as TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello reports, the likely reason for them leaving is “money and movies”. Both Gough and Millar have been focusing on movie projects in recent years and WB could save money by just paying the leading writers who have been more hands on lately.

An Extra Hour of Lost for Season 4?

Rumor: While Ausiello was dispelling the Smallville rumors, he brought in a fresh rumor of his own by revealing that Carlton and fellow “Lost” producers may fit in an extra hour this season for their hit ABC series.

Source: TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello

Mania Verdict: TRUE---It seems fitting that they will end the current season with 14 episodes instead of the unlucky 13 previously expected. The question remains on how they will fit it in before their May 22 finale night.

The really big Devastator appearing in Transformers 2?

Rumor: At the same time, LR was producing the Joe rumors late last week, another wildfire rumor sprang up centering on the possibility of a really big robot---the Constructicons’ unified Devastator--- making a cameo appearance as well.

Source: IESB

Mania Verdict: TRUE---Michael Bay will want to expand on his original “Really Big Robot” theme in the upcoming sequel and we know one Constructicon, the Bone Crusher, already made an appearance in the first film.

Heroes: Origins isn’t coming to TV after all?

Rumor: The WGA strike halted plans to have a spin-off series of NBC’s “Heroes” featuring the origins of new possible characters to later be introduced into the original series. The latest rumors says even if the writers are back at work, the spin-off has been called off.

Source: Various

Mania Verdict: TRUE—The confirmation came straight from NBC’s Ben Silverman at last week’s “Infront” conference. For now, there will be no spin-off for the hit series but what’s to say it won’t happen a few years down the road.

Vin Diesel’s action film Babylon A.D getting 70 minutes cut out?

Rumor: Sources have indicated that French director Matthieu Kassovitz turned in a 160 minute sci-fi action film for their U.K version and the studio wants to cut it down to 90 minutes for distribution in the US and turned it from R to PG-13.

Source: Twitch Film

Mania Verdict: FALSE---Here's the official response from the production company.

Orlando Bloom Leading Prince of Persia Franchise?

Rumor: A wild rumor popped up that Pirates’ star Orlando Bloom was reuniting with a new Disney franchise upstart Prince of Persia, based on the best selling video game series.

Source: WENN

Mania Verdict: FALSE---Disney was quick to shoot the rumor down to all media sites online within hours.

Well, as much as I enjoyed the POTC franchise, Orlando Bloom was by far the weakest link in it, in my opinion. Prince of Persia is cool, but I would not want him as the lead. And last I checked Bloom was a tad pale to be playing a Persian.
The Babylon AD story really sucks. Granted 160 minutes is a little too long for a flick like this, but they could have at least just cut it down instead of making it into a PG-13 flick. I guess I`ll have to wait for the Directors Cut.
Shame about Heroes Origins. Its funny, I love the show, but since its been off the air so long, I haven`t even thought about it.
I still don`t think Bay will actually have Devastator in TF2, or at least the one we are used to seeing. Besides Prime put a sword through Bonecrusher`s head. He should be toast.
All I can say is, More Lost? Count me In!!!
They better come with some strong more interesting stories next season on Smallville.
I have no problem at all with The Rock or Brendan Fraser being in GI.JOE. In fact I think the Rock would be perfect for that.
Off topic, has anyone seen Southland Tales? What a freakin mess that was! Loved Donnie Darko, but damn, don`t know what Richard Kelly was sniffin or smokin.

I didn't see Southland Tales, but I did hear it was quite the mess from someone who did... I'm still curious about it... for some reason I like watching a train wreck every once in a while.

I also don't have a problem with Fraser or Johnson in GI Joe. The Rock fits the part, and according to the article Fraser would be filling in a bit part as Gung Ho, meaning that if he's somehow miscast as some people seem to fear we won't have to deal with it for long.

I read about the extra Lost hour and the Devastator rumor in an online TV Guide article... Can never have too much Lost, and I certainly can never have too many gigantic robots battling it out on the big screen...

Love reading rumor control, Mania... Keep it up!

Now, I totally loved Southland Tales,,,,I thought it was a very cool movie. One thing to remember, it is like Star Wars, it starts with Chapter 4. There is a 3 part graphic novel series leading up to the events in the movie and helps the movie make a lot more sense.,,,you can still see it and enjoy it without the comics, but I reccomend reading them....check a torrent site for them......Now, Fraser and Johnson,,,very cool....Heroes, not too disapointed as long as the regular show comes back.....Transformers, the spec script I got says Devastator is in it, so it could be true...If it is like in what I read, Devastator will be jacking up Las Vegas....carnage candy.

Combiners is the way to go for Transformers. Devastator is the best first choice. I did like Predaking also combining animal transformers. I know Bay said no Dinobots but they should have been made back in G1 as combiners. I would have liked to have seen Bay leave TF for other projects, but hopefully he takes better notes for this next one.

Whiskey, maybe I`ll watch Southland Tales again. Its not that I didn`t get it or anything, but I just had this weird sense that I was just watching something going absolutely nowhere. And where Donnie Darko, seemed to me to make a point, Southland Tales just seemed to be too all over the place. I would hate to have seen the directors version that was like 1 hr longer, although, maybe it would have been more sensical.

My thoughts down the rumor list.

1. Glad the Joe rumors are finally up on this site. Frankly I don't care if Fraser is going to play a gay GI JOE, he only has a cameo, so be it. I'm all up for The Rock if they want to use him, I enjoy some of his flicks like Walking Tall, Gridiron Gang, he's not the greatest actor in the world but he ain't no Triple H either. On another note, I like to nominate Kimbo Slice for a role in GI JOE. If you don't know who he is yet, youtube it to see some ass kicking.

2. Glad the guys on Smallville left, sad they just picked other people working on the show to replace them instead of bringing in fresh blood to try to save whatever can be saved from what that show has become. Tom Welling should have 0 creative control over Clark Kent/Superman or any character for that matter really.
3. Extra hour of Lost!!??? FRakkin sweet. Give us a Sawyer episode if one ain't in the works yet. I think they can fit in the hour before the season finale. I had heard that the usual 2 hour season finale would be broken up into 2 one hour eps this year. If they are going to do another episode they can fit it in prior to the finale and then have the finale run 2 hours the next thursday. Lost is coming back 4/24 at a later time in case any of you didn't know.
4. Big robot in Transformers? Sweet. I thought it was pretty cool seeing the Transformers come to life even though I find fault in the film like many of you, so looking foward to seeing a really big ass robot coming to life. Yo, is Galvatron up in this flick?
5. I figured after Heroes's disappointing second season ( I still liked it before anyone starts complaining) and the strike, it would lead to no Origins. Shame, I was looking foward to the different directors they were going to bring in to work on it. Wasn't Kevin Smith supposed to do one? Don't remember.
6. Vin Diesel in a sci fi flick? I had no idea, I thought that dude would be shooting Fast & the 4ious.
7. Orland Bloom as the Prince in the Prince of Persia? Glad he aint it. Now, I said this yesterday in one of the threads so I'll mention it now cause they didn't put it up in this rumor section. I was over at IGN getting my video game news and they were reporting that Disney had offered the role of the Prince to Jake Gyllenhal. My question is why!!?? He's not a bad actor, it's just Jake Gyllenhal isn't the first person that pops to mind when I'm thinking about a persian. Anyway, for the Prince of Persia flick I'd like if they made the Prince have the moves from the guy from Casino Royale who Bond chases at the beginnign of the film. I forget what that sport is called. I think it's big in europe. Is it "free runners"? Anyway, the Prince needs to move around like that.

ponyboy76 • Apr 11, 2008, 06:23am •
yeah, its called La Parkour or Free Running. It is some crazy stuff. There is this french flick called District 13 I think, with nothing but people chasing eachother doing free running. its not a great movie but the free running is hella cool.

Not to stir the pot, but the rumor about Babylon AD is FALSE!

This is directly from the Babylon AD myspace page at www.myspace.com/babylonadmovie

The Blog on the Rumor can be reached via http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=148885877&blogID=376829383

Here it is in entirety...

Hello all you Babylon AD friends !

The last days have been busy with news about the length and the rating of Babylon AD. I always find it amazing to see rumors grow from other rumors or misunderstanding. Therefore I think the time is good to give you some updates.

Babylon AD has never had a 2h40min cut. This rumor came from a joke Mathieu did in front of some journalists last september. Apparently some of them didn't understand it... The approximate length of the film is 1h40min and this is what has been delivered to our partner, FOX. So I can reassure you, FOX is not chopping up the film and cutting 70min like I read on Rotten Tomatoes ! :-)

Oh and about the PG13, that was a contractual agreement between Fox and us, so there is no surprise on that end.

The truth is Fox - like any other studio - will have their final cut on their territories and Mathieu Kassovitz has his on the European ones. So there will naturally be a few differences between the two versions.

Now about the film, StudioCanal is working on teasers and the poster for the European territories as I speak. A French teaser should be released on the web quite soon !

Stay tuned for the next blog update!

Best,
Guyom

You have to love Diesel because he loves the same geek things we all do but he just can't get his geek movies right. Riddick, though I liked it, didn't spawn the sequals he wanted. I was stoked about this Babylon movie but I hate when studios make a movie taht was supposed to be an "R" down to a PG-13. Didn't 300 show a rated "R" movie could succeed? I admit thats waaaay too long of an original run time but it sounds like they are doing a hack job on it.

I think Hereos need to re-establish itself because this last season sucked and yeah, the writers strike kind of killed it I didnt like where it was going before all of that happened. If it gets back on course, look for this topic to come up again.

I actually want to see Babylon AD, I enjoy Vin films. But if the movie is cut down by as much as the rumour suggest I will not likely even bother until dvd. I will not go to the theatres to see a movie that has had literally half of it cut out.

Also sick of this dumbing down crap that Hollywood likes doing these days. PG-13 movies are fine, but I am sick to shit of seeing things brought to PG-13 just for a buck.
