Mummy Reboot Loses Director

A family film?

It appears that The Mummy will stay wrapped up at Universal for a little while longer. The Wrap is reporting that Andy Muschetti, the director of Mama, has left The Mummy reboot/ relaunch over creative differences. The script, written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), had set “The Mummy” in a modern setting with new characters.

The reason for the split is in what kind of movie the director wants to make and what Universal believes will make money. “Muschetti wanted to deliver a darker take rather than the four-quadrant, more family-friendly action-adventure blockbuster that Universal now has in mind”.

Personally, I would rather see a darker film, especially from the director of Mama, over another Brendan Fraser popcorn snore fest.

Sound off below Maniacs. Would you have rather seen Muschetti’s tale or what Universal will probably release?

"had set “The Mummy” in a modern setting with new characters" What? Modern setting, no good that is and now I understand why he would want to leave...

I'ts funny when studios think their way will earn more money and than it ends up a flop and kills the francise..

I'm not for a modern setting either.  Say what you will about Brendan Frazier, at a time when another Indiana Jones movie was still many years and a huge disappointment away, the family-friendly action movie was awesome.  Then again, I can understand not wanting to do the exact same thing again...I'd be down for a darker tone, but I wouldn't want it set in present day.  Screw that noise.

Putting it in a modern setting is a HUGE risk, especially if they are not going to go with a modern, darker feel. How in the heck do these idiots get jobs at studios?

@Ironmaniac...They get their jobs by sharing Co pious amounts of Cocaine with one another, thus staying true to friend circle of coke heads that run or assist run these studios, Ya baby!

Why does everything these days have to be a friggin "reboot?"  Can't it just be another movie?

Caveman, I also enjoyed the Brendan Fraser movies.  At least the first two anyway.  I never saw the third one.  I know they had Indiana Jones type aspirations for the series.

If they wanna remake something with the Mummy in it, why not remake Monster Squad?  That movie is the tits!  It's one of my most valued Blu-Rays in my collection.

VT - I never saw the third Mummy either, and honestly I only really enjoyed the first movie, but I can admit that the second one wasn't TERRIBLE...but I did think it was definitely the Temple of Doom to The Mummy's "Raiders"

mlaforce, thx for clearing that up. I thought it had something to do with Bryan Singer pool parties.
