Murray on GHOSTBUSTERS 3

Bill Murray says Ghostbusters 3 is hogwash.

Despite donning those old Ghostbusters duds in last year's Zombieland and numerous reports of Columbia Pictures gearing up for a third installment of the franchise, original star Bill Murray doesn't seem too confident on the prospects. While out on the press circuit promoting his next film Get Low, the actor has been giving some opinions on the status of Ghostbusters 3 to two different websites. In both cases he said it's the studio feeding the hype and described the third film's development as "hogwash" and a "nightmare."

To Eric Eisenberg at CinemaBlend:

“It’s just really the movie studio. They love the franchise, they’d just like to re-create it again. All this talk is just talk. It drives me nuts, it’s just people talking. And now, it’s like, on the street people go ‘hey, hey, hey,’ you know, why don’t you go back to high school? Quit bothering me. Until someone actually creates a great script it’s just hogwash, it doesn’t mean anything. It’s interesting that people are interested in it, they’d like to see it. It was a great thing, it really was fun. Maybe it should. And if it’s such a good idea, then someone will write the screenplay.”

Murray said much of the same to Perri Nemiroff at ComingSoon, touching upon those rumors that he would die at the beginning and be brought back as a ghost. It should be noted that he end did his answer with an indication that he would like to revisit his Ghostbusters character.

When asked to clarify whether making the movie really would be a "nightmare," Bill Murray told us this, "Well, it’s true, but we made a great movie and then we made another one, you know? So we went to the well twice and it’s almost impossible to do the second movie as well. Only horror movies get better as they go along because they have more money to spend for more crazy effects. I actually thought the other day--it’s just become so irritating--but I actually heard people like, young people that really [heard] of the movie when they were kids and I thought, 'You know, maybe I should just do it. Maybe it’d be fun to do.' Because the guys are funny and I miss [Rick] Moranis and Annie [Potts] and Danny. Those people are some people that were really, you know, I miss them. I think that’s really a big part of it."

Take from his quotes what you will, Maniacs. Columbia Pictures has maintained that writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky are in charge of fleshing out a story which will have the original team passing the baton to a younger generation. The studio is reportedly eyeing a summer release in 2011.

This is like Indiana Jones...until they greenlight it and are filming it I'll take everything as rumor.  After the 3rd Indy movie we heard the same kind of B.S. for 20 years before they finally made it.  There is nothing to suggest it won't be the same with Ghostbusters 3.

I really want them to make a third Ghostbusters movie, but at the rate it's going I'll believe it's going to be made when I'm actually in line to see it.

But I did like the game so if they even make a sequel to that, that will be good enough for me.

I don't see this happening not in 2011 or any other time not with the original cast. I feel that if they can't get everyone on board for a third film (Which is looking more and more likely) Columbia will say fuck it and start over rebooting with a brand new cast and brand new story.

As much as I would love to see this come to life, I hope they don't really mess it up.  The studio can talk themselves into a disaster like Batman & Robin, Fantastic Four, or X-Men: Last Stand.

If you guys remember mania posted something about this awhile back with Muray not liking the origional script and Muray himself wanting his charachter to be killed off in the new franchise. I think his badmouthing the ghost busters franchise is just his way of getting back at studio execs who think his death idea for his charachter are  nuts I think dragon261 may be right and they may just start over now and do a reboot

Leave well enough alone.

I say do it. Since all the leads have creative control over the project, they can veto bad scripts and ideas, so if someone has a good one, what do they have to lose? Are they really going to ruin the first movie by doing another? Did the Watchmen graphic novel get ruined by the movie? No, it hasn't changed an iota, and a Ghostbusters sequel won't change the original one bit.

Its Columbia so just like Spider Pig we will get PIG BUSTERS and not Ghostbusters.

How can these guys not have the writing chemistry of the first. Ivan Reitman has gone the way of Andy Davis and other 80's - 90's directors. The laces are there but the shoes are velcro.

Was the Apatow thing a few years ago just a rumor? That didnt even die it just vanished and was forgotten.

There has got to be a GOZR returns story that will be great. I would love to see Ron Howard take over with Reitman producing. Of Course Arrested Development  movies are gettin the Ghostbuster rumor treatment.

Write Zombie Murray into a Zombieland movie and Columbus, Tallahassee and the ladies have to find Ramis, Weaver, Hudson and Ackroyd to help him. But Murray turns out to be a new breed of non flesheating Vodka due to the booze and lots of good marijuana. Sad that there is such a thing as bad marijuana.
