The MUST HAVE Toys from Toy Fair 2014
Toy Fair has come and gone and all that is left is the wanting and buying. Many of the toys we saw come out of Toy Fair will not be available until the Fall of 2014. Some, like the Guardians of the Galaxy figures, will come in time for the summer hype. Each and every year, I scour aisles of the International Toy Fair and come with a top 10 list. This year there were just too many damn good toys. Thus, I have complied a MUST HAVE list for 2014. Enjoy!
Super Powers Collection by Mattel
I remember the original line fondly and still have my Martian Manhunter and Doctor Fate. I just think back to all those Comic Book shows and how people repainted them to look like Marvel Heroes. If you did that or lost your’s to a yard sale, MattyCollector will relaunch this fall with a new 6inch line.
The first wave of these figures will include:
Batman: coming September
Superman: coming September
Wonder Woman: coming September
Gold Superman: coming October
Green Lantern as The Riddler: coming October
Mr. Mxyzptlk: coming October
Kalibak: collect and connect figure
NECA’s 1989 Video Game Predator
NECA has already produced Video renditions of Freddy, Jason, and RoboCop. What rally sets these figures apart is their retro video game packaging. Perfect for toy collectors and gamers, the 1989 Video Game Predator arrives in May!
MattyCollector’s Goatman - Traveling Convention Exclusive
MattyCollector has scaled back a tad on their Masters of the Universe Classics line. That doesn’t mean they won’t distribute another must have Con Exclusive ($25.00). Check out Goatman! Before you ask who that is, here is a little backstory on Goatman. Goatman (or known to his buddies as Klacky) was a servant of Beastman. He first appeared as a one-shot character in “Secret Of The Dragon's Egg”. He has no love for Buzz-Off, having been wounded and left for dead by the Eternian hero.
Back to the Future Time Machine w/ Mr. Fusion - Hot Wheels Elite
There have been numerous releases of the Doc Brown’s time traveling DeLorean. This, by far, has to be my favorite. This line for Mattel’s Hot Wheels is called the Hot Wheels Elite (details here)and has already seen K.I.T.T from Knight Rider. The line will also feature the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 and the Adam West Batmobile. The Back to the Future Time Machine w/ Mr. Fusion arrives in April ($159.99).
NECA’s Planet of the Apes Line - Warrior Ape
With the arrival of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes this summer, NECA will be releasing new figures for that movie (see Vine here). What got this POTA’s fan excited was NECA’s retro line of the original 1969 film. NECA had on display Cornelius, Dr. Zaius, and my personal must-have, the Warrior Ape (below).
Funko’s ReAction Rocketeer Figure
Funko’s is launching an entire new series this year called ReAction Figures. The series started with the original molds from the un-produced ALIEN Kenner Line (see pics here). Funk will release a wave upon wave of these retro figures with everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the Universal Classic Monsters. Other classic properties include Predator, Terminator and Escape from New York. Personally, I must have their Rocketeer!
PowerUp Paper Airplane
There is always one toy at toy fair that is so simple, you wish you would have thought of it first. Maniacs, let me introduce you the Power Up Airplane. Currently, you can purchase the PowerUp 2.0 for 14.99. It has a flight time of about 60 seconds. It is a fun way to take your sleek paper airplane to the next level. The next step, which is coming soon, is the PowerUp 3.0. This paper airplane will fly for 10 minutes and be remote controlled by your smart phone. Check out the full details here: http://www.poweruptoys.com/. This just looks like a lot of fun!
Technomancer Digital Wizard Hoodie from ThinkGeek
All right, this one is definitely on the dorkier side of Toy Fair. Let’s be honest, you probably know at least two people that would love this! Think Geek always supplies the very best of what it means to be to be a Geek and this hoodie proves that. The video below explains it all. Just imagine thwarting those evil demons that haunt your late night walks with the Technomancer Digital Wizard Hoodie. Order it here!
Mezco Toyz Mrs. Bates - Living Dead Dolls
The Living Dolls, by Mezco Toyz, always mix sweet doll babies with our favorite horror characters. So it is appropriate that Norman Bates’ mother should be the next horror legend to get her own doll baby. Mrs. Bates (or Mother) arrives in the Fall of 2014.
KRE-O G.I. JOE TERROR DROME Building Set by Hasbro
Details - Pieces: 856; Available: Fall 2014
If there is one GI Joe playset I regret selling on eBay, it was the Cobra Terror Dome. It was simply fantastic! All those years and Cobra never had a place to hang their fangs. Then BAM! The Terror Dome arrives, putting the GI Joe headquarters to shame. Hasbro is releasing a KRE-O version that has even more bells and whistles than the original toy. It is complete with a fueling station, jail, armory, and SERPENTOR’s Throne. COBRA! It also includes the SERPENTOR AIR CHARIOT and CLAYTON “HAWK” ABERNATHY’s VTOL aircraft. Need Joes and Cobras for this beast of a building set? There are six collectible KREON figures, including CLAYTON “HAWK” ABERNATHY, GUNG HO, BLAINE “MAINFRAME” PARKER, COBRA SCAR TROOPER, SERPENTOR and XAMOT. Sadly, the Firebat is part of another set.
LEGO’s Ghostbusters and Ecto-1
Details: Ecto-1measures over 3” (9cm) high, 7” (20cm) long and 2” (6cm) wide. It contains 508 Pieces and is available June, 2014. Retail price $49.99 (US).
Before the passing of Harold Ramis, The Ghostbusters and the Ecto-1 were pretty cool. Now they are a must have. This set is a great reminder of one of the best comedies of all time. Though, in looking at the details of this set, you can only hope that the Ghostbuster’s Firehouse is not too far off.
LEGO’s The Simpson House
Details - Pieces: 2,523. Price $199.99. Available NOW!
One has to wonder why this particular property took so long to make it. LEGO? The possibilities are limitless. Imagine building Springfield, completely! What I really hope they do is release a Treehouse of Terror collection. Imagine if we could pick up a different collection of Simpsons characters based on the Halloween specials. Perhaps we will see a Halloween variation on LEGO’s advent calendar.
Dark Knight Returns Batmobile
Last, and certainly not least, is The Dark Knight Returns’ Batmobile. This particular Batmobile is designed by Eagle Moss Collections and perfectly recreates the Batmobile from Frank Miller’s classic story. There is an entire line of Batmobiles coming, plus some cars of the Joker as well. This is my MUST HAVE of this series.
