Nabari no O Review

Junior high school student Rokujou Miharu lives a peaceful life with his grandparents in a scenic coastal village and assists them with their restaurant.  His life as he knows it is far away from the supposedly ancient world of ninjas and their nindou (way of the ninja).  After turning down his classmate and English teacher when they ask him to join their martial arts club, they are forced to reveal to Miharu that he will have to become a ninja in order to protect his hijutsu (hidden technique) that is living inside him.  They also reveal that there are multiple ninja clans that are after his hijutsu and the power that it possesses.  After a kidnap attempt is made by a ninja clan to capture Miharu, he realizes that the hijutsu does exist inside him, but he is still reluctant to train.  Miharu is content with his current life and has no interest in becoming the ninja leader needed in order to stop the battles for the hijutsu. However, Miharu may be forced to change his mind since the hunt for his hijutsu appears to just be getting started.

From the first time it is revealed that the main protagonist, a young adolescent male harbors a powerful element sealed inside his body, it is hard to think of Nabari no Å as anything but a Naruto knock-off.  The story is about ninjas but since it takes place in the modern world as it is known today, the ninjas operate covertly and most people believe they are a part of the past. After watching the first episode, it is clear that this show won’t become a blatant Naruto copycat since there are enough differences and the storyline is interesting from the first episode.  The characters are drawn in the typical lanky style but the fight scenes show more originality. The scenes with the ninjas show a darker and more elegant style again typical of many fighting shows. Hopefully the show will progress into more than just a hunt for the hijutsu.  Nabari no Å has the potential to display originality if they show how the ninjas live secretly alongside regular citizens and how they become ninjas in the first place.
