From a Press Release...

Marvel Studios announced today that Academy Award nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio’s highly anticipated movie 'Thor'. In the early 'Thor' comics, Jane Foster was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki.  Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce 'Thor'.  Principal photography for the film is set for early 2010.  The film will be released in the US on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: 'Thor'. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard.  At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment.  Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Portman will next be seen starring in Jim Sheridan’s 'Brothers' opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire.  She may be most well known for her role as Queen Padme Amidala in the 'Star Wars' Trilogy.  Other film credits include 'V for Vendetta' and 'The Professional'.

'Thor' is one of a continuing slate of films being produced by Marvel Studios based on the Marvel characters, including 'Iron Man 2' on May 7, 2010, 'The First Avenger: Captain America' on July 22, 2011, and 'The Avengers' on May 4, 2012.

Portman is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, CAA and George Sheanshang.

What do you think, Maniacs? Is Natalie Portman the right choice for Jane Foster? Does Jane Foster's prominence in the movie surprise you? Post your comments below...

I'm still really not sure about Chris Hemsworth as The Mighty Thor I still see Thor as being a big Triple H type guy , he just doesn't seem that Mighty.

Now I can see Hiddleston as Loki , hes scrawny and looks like he can pull off the God of Mischeif and deciet.

As far as Portman goes yeah I can see her as a nurse , dont really care im more intrested in seeing Beil as Enchantress or Lady Sif , hot hot hot I think she'll look good in Green leather . Good thing my wife does nt read this shit ,lol.

Everybody at Marvel including Faveru really loved his Ideas and vision for they movie I just hope his casting doesnt Kill it. Cause everybody loves a Drunk Thunder God

Alex Skarsgard would have made a awesome Thor. The dude has the look. Hopefully maybe he can play Cap tho he could pull that off nicely.

Natalie is yummy =)

So with this very cool casting, Biel still has a shot at being in this movie? With Jane Foster definitely being in the movie, the first movie seems too soon to have "the jealous woman" as Biel would basically be no matter which she played but that is a very Shakesperean concept so I guess so... My vote is Enchantress...

What's funny is that for no reason at all the other day I said to myself - I bet Natalie Portman gets a role in this.  I don't know why.  True story.  Sometimes I get these useless little inkings of things that are going to happen.  Always useless though.

Yes,may the force be with her! Wait!!! that's another movie........

You know, I was firmly in the Skaarsgard camp and then I saw a new preview for a Perfect Getaway, didn't even recognize Hemsworth as the guy who played Kirk Sr., have to admit, he looks like he might have the size and the right stoic thing going.

Preview for anyone who wants to check it out

Oh, and we totally need Skaarsgard as Cap, the guy is too good to not have involved in a major Marvel movie in some way.

Guess they're changing up the story. Last I heard, I thought the action was to take place in Asgard, not on Earth.  Or I wonder if it will still primarily be in Asgard, but about 3/4 of the way through, he's sent to Earth and he meets Jane, setting up action for the sequel and The Avengers. Who knows? Guess we'll find out.  She's definitely a good casting move in terms of talent.  Now, let's get Biel in there for Enchantress!

I am still in the Alexander Skaarsgard camp.  I think Branaugh just went with the guy he knows.

Before this article, I could not have told you who Jane Foster was, but I like Natalie as a nurse.  Heck, put her in just about any role and she could probably do it.  But I think I'll always remember Natalie best from that skit on SNL:

"Hi!! Welcome to Jamba Juice!! How are YOU today?!!!"

Agree with everybody. Portman is perfect for Foster and Biel's gotta be Enchantress.

Hemsworth is already a big guy. But I'm sure he's already started on a 300 type bulk-up with Marvel paid trainers.
