NBC to Renew HEROES

Despite a ratings decline.

It looks like fans of NBC's "Heroes" will have another year of viewing in store for them. The network has announced plans to order 18-20 more episodes of the series despite the action-drama's ratings declining, which has caused some media outlets to speculate on whether it was going to return next fall.

In their annual Q&As with the five broadcast network chiefs, the Hollywood Reporter asked NBC entertainment president Angela Bromstad if "Heroes" could be considered "on the bubble" for a renewal.

For all its headline-making audience erosion, "Heroes" is still tied with NBC's "The Office" as the network's top-rated series among adults 18-49 this season. Another point in "Heroes" favor is the show performs well internationally. Bromstad said she experienced the drama's global popularity first-hand in her previous NBC post, heading the network's international efforts based in London.

"Every single place you go has heard about 'Heroes' -- whether you're in China or Japan or Russia," she said. "And to me, that is global content."

The network has privately discussed setting a series end date for "Heroes," which would followed the creative model used with critical success by ABC's "Lost," Sci Fi's "Battlestar Galactica" and FX's "The Shield." But even if NBC ever made such a move, Bromstad said, they wouldn't want to make next season the conclusion.

"Heroes" fans aren't entirely in the clear yet: a renewal isn't a deal until it's a deal. If the show took a sudden dire ratings turn, the network still has time to reevaluate this strategy. But barring something dramatic happening, NBC is not deterred by the current ratings and will bring back "Heroes" for a fourth round.

Less episodes should definitely help out this series(hopefully they make 18) and NBC is probably betting the new guy turns the show around for them, which let's face it, that more than likely will not happen in Season 3.

I also wanted to note that I read 3 characters will die but only 2 for real.  I mean come on it's Heroes, they gotta pull the "he's dead oh wait he really wasn't" card for the 100th time.

It's still a good show but the writing sucks on the show.  It's so easy to tell Rebel is that kid that talks to machines from season 1 and 2.  I can't believe how dumbed down the show got.  At least Lost and 24 kept the same feel throughout their seasons.  BSG jumped their shark after New Caprica, you would think Heroes would learn from others mistakes and sucesses.

I watch the show, but I'm still curious as to why renew it?  They don't have the budget to make it the super action show it wants to be and they don't have the writers to make it the clever comic book show fans cry out for.  Unlike Lost & BSG, it isn't really setup to be a show with a specific ending.  The cause of the Heroes' powers just isn't that intriguing.

I'm with you on less episodes being better for this one, Hanso.

Look don't peg me as hating on the show cause honestly  that first season if i wasnt watching the show i was talkin about it constantly. But as the seasons progressed the writing and structure have fell off so bad I can hardly believe its the same show.

I still pull for the show and get a hint that there is still hope it will pull itself up not just to be adequate but great tv again.

My number one gripe was like most that theres never any impending fear of threat to anyone on the show. They will all be back next week next month next season.

And Hiro was by far the wonderboy of the show that they seem to just have no idea what to do with..when he teleported himself to NYC in the first season I couldnt remeber a time that id seen something magical and cool and just all out happy to see in a character..and I thought great times in things were in store for him, now they just keep him like some joke..

They need to get thier act together ..Im still a fan, just not as big of one as id like to be.

There was enough hype left in Heroes to push it to a season 4.  Like hanso said, with the new writer they probably hope he can turn this around.  I'm not as worried about the number of characters as I am the inconsistent use of their powers.  Too many to name here but every time they get in trouble I'm thinking he or she will just use their power to get out of that situation but they don't so then they get captured or something else stupid happens....leaving me scratching my head.

No, the show doesn't have the budget for fantastic spectacle. And the show has at times gotten muddled in its writing but I still enjoy the characters and what happens to them and am happy it will continue.

Good, I still like watching Heroes. It's not the best show on TV (never was, BSG owns that title, BITCHES!!!)

but I have fun watching it, and look forward to mondays still.
