NECA’s Godzilla and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Figures

A look at the latest from NECA

There’s little doubt that two if the biggest films of the Spring and Summer season will be the already released Godzilla and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which will release in July.  NECA has got you covered with new figures for both films.  Today Mania continues to look at new toy releases for the Spring as we check out the latest from NECA.

Godzilla is based on the new look Godzilla in the film as opposed to the classic Godzilla.  While I enjoyed the film I was lukewarm on the new design, particularly the smallish head and shorter snout.  The NECA sculpt is right on the money however.  The figure stands 6” to 7” tall although it checks in at around 12” from the top of his head to the tip of his tail.  With 25 points of articulation the figure is remarkably poseable.  However the paint job is disappointing.  Godzilla is black…very black.  Black on black.  The only break in the murky paint scheme is his yellow eyes, red tongue and white teeth.  Oh and his nails are black…but a blacker black!  Honestly what a shame.  It’s almost like they had a surplus of black paint and wanted to use it up.  How about some tinting or shading?  Or maybe some whitish/blue tint to his spines as if he is getting ready to use his atomic breath?  And speaking of his teeth they fall short as well.  The teeth are all the same length…short.  He has no extend incisors as he should have.  The packaging is nice but overall this Godzilla is a monster disappointment.  Grade C+.

The Dawn of the Power of the Apes features 3 different figures in the group: Caesar, the leader; Maurice, an orangutan; and Koba, a chimpanzee.  All of these characters appeared in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and return for the sequel.  All of the figures stand 6” tall although Maurice is notably heavier due to his girth.  As you would hope for from characters that are primates they are highly articulated and poseable.

Maurice is my favorite.  He is incredibly detailed.  His fur is shaded and sculpted to give it a textured look.  His eyes are simple yet hint at a strong intelligence.  His lower torso restricts how much his upper thighs move and he comes with a book as his only accessory.

Koba is the bonobo chimpanzee who has a strong grudge against humans.  The detail on his face perfectly captures his tortured past as an animal that was experimented upon.  The color throughout is gorgeous with flecks of brown, white, and grey giving him an aged look.  He comes with interchangeable hands and spear.

Caesar is very similar to Koba and that is my only complaint about the line.  Caesar is a different sculpt than Koba.  He stands more upright while Koba is slightly hunched over.  Caesar’s muscles are also a bit more defined than Koba’s.  Caesar also has a different paint job.  The colors are the same but he looks less weathered and his eyes are both intelligent and sinister.  His ears are slightly smaller and do not stick out as wide.  He also comes with interchangeable hands and a spear.
While the Godzilla figure was only average, NECA has hit it out of the park with the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes figures.  They feature outstanding sculpts with great paint jobs with spot on likenesses to the films.  Grade: A.
