The Review!
Audio - I listened to the English dubbed version. I did not notice any serious problems.

Video - The video was exactly like the last disc. I still have a problem with A.D.V. entering English text above or below Japanese characters, just leave it as it is.

Packaging - I know some will disagree with me on this one, but I did like the cover. Just because Rei is awesome!

Extras - The only extra was a half dozen character bios.

Menus - Easy and simple to use, but nothing impressive.

Content - Episode five starts with the failed Eva Unit 00 activation test. Rei had sustained serious injuries before, but the cause was never touched upon until now. It is revealed that Rei was trapped inside the out of control Eva prototype. At this point in the show it is hard to understand how a synthetic android can act on its own. The mayhem resumes with the Eva pounding away at the observation window and beating the wall. Seconds latter the entry plug is ejected and thrown around the room before it makes a not so soft landing. Gendo shows great concern for the well being of Rei at this point. One might remember Gendo showed no concern for Shinji in the aftermath of the first angel's attack. Gendo forces the superheated hatch open with his bare hands to rescue Rei. Gendo's glasses are thrown from his face and land next to the plug. Seconds later the lenses crack.

Back in the present, NERV is shown dissecting the remains of the fourth angel. Even weeks after the Unit 00 incident, the cause is still unknown why Unit 00 went out of control. The theory is mental instability in Rei, but I wonder... Shinji is shocked and thrown into disbelief to hear that his father saved someone (Rei) at the cost of his own well-being.

Shinji's friends notice he is taking a notice to Rei (in a swimsuit) during gym. Shinji is quick to his own defense in saying he just wants to know why she is always alone. I really liked Toji's answer, "maybe she just has a lousy personality".

I would like to point out that Misato's choice of food and her cooking of instant soup are as high as her living standards. Even the warm water Pen-Pen is in agreement. Ritsuko asks Shinji to deliver Rei's new security card to her, because she forgot to give it to her earlier. Shinji's curiosity of Rei is touched upon again with a under the influence Misato.

Shinji invites himself into Rei's apartment since there was no answer at the door. Rei's apartment is a little run down...ok maybe more than a little. Shinji notices a pair of glasses that resemble his fathers. Apparently Rei took them after the Unit 00 incident. Rei did not take to kindly to Shinji for putting them on. Rei caused Shinji to loose his footing and he fell on an unclothed Rei. For some reason Rei did not really care.

Keeping a distance from one another Rei and Shinji make there way to NERV HQ. Where Rei makes a not so soft pat on Shinji's face. Unit 00 is reactivated successfully, but soon after the fifth angel makes its appearance. The fifth angel disables Unit 01 before Shinji has a chance to defend himself.

There is not a lot of moving the story along in the next episode, since NERV has to deal with the new angel. Unit 01 chest has been melted down to the third layer and Shinji is unconscious with mental trauma. We are shown that Misato is very intelligent; so far this has not been expressed to well. Misato's plan is to snipe the target out of the angel's targeting range with the SSDF's new prototype positron rifle, and to repel the angel's fire with a piece of a space shuttle. To power the weapon, the entire energy of Japan is needed.

The one problem Misato does not have control over is Shinji. He does not want to pilot the Eva again. Rei delivers him a new plug suit and updates him on the operation timetables. Rei gets her revenge on Shinji in an unconscious way. Her exact words "do not show up looking like that pilot Ikari". Referring to Shinji's out in the open body.

The operation is a success and the angel is hit dead on by the beam. The first shot fired by Shinji was cancelled out by the angel's beam, since they were fired at the same time. Rei, in the meantime, is holding the angel's 2nd offense with the space shuttle when Shinji fired the second shot.

Unit 00 is severely damaged and Shinji forces the entry plug open to save Rei. The scene is similar to the one with Gendo Ikari. We get to see Rei do a nice smile for Shinji.

The next episode, in my mind, is a filler episode. The show could have done without it. It is about a civilian corporation developing their own means of countering the angels. Ritsuko and Misato attend the demonstration, on behalf of Nerv, of Jet Alone. It is a bi-pedal weapon that runs off of a nuclear reactor for longer activation, and is controlled by an onboard computer.

The only thing this episode has to offer for the actual story is the sabotage of Jet Alone. We are shown a scene with someone changing the commands and the password to Jet Alone just before the activation. I wonder who that could be? When the J.A. goes out of control Misato takes charge and orders Hyuga to roll out the transport and bring Shinji and Unit 01. Misato discovers the password she was given to override J.A. has been changed recently. Her only hope is to push the rods in manual. At the last second the computer returns to normal operations, and all is well or is it?

Back at NERV, Ritsuko says that the operation was successful except for Misato's intervention. Who thinks Ritsuko reprogrammed J.A.?

The next episode takes a different turn unlike the others. With the introduction of the second child Asuka Langley Sohyru. Her entrance was awesome, because she managed to just about offend and assault everybody there. Most of all Toji who never leaves a debt unpaid. This episode also introduces another character, Ryoji Kaji. Who happens to turn out to be an old boyfriend of Misato's. This episode provides relief from the seriousness of the past episodes. This episode is a lot of fun to watch.

The navy is transporting Evangelion Unit 02 to Japan from Germany. All comic relief sounded well until an angel crashed the party. Asuka is forced to take action...with Shinji rubbing up against her in the entry plug. Shinji soon learns why his entry plug suit was designed differently than that of Rei's. Unit 02 is thrown into the ocean by the advancing angel and is unable to move. Unit 02 is using the B-Type equipment, which is for land engagement, not the blue sea. As Toji puts it, Unit 02 is eaten and the angel is caught by mastering the art of moron fishing. In a matter of speaking...

This show continues to get better with each episode. This DVD is awesome! I recommend this show highly.
