The Review!
(Includes Spoilers)

Things really speed up as we approach the final episodes of the series. These episodes have some shortfalls which I will explain soon, but overall, these episodes stay on pace with those of the last DVD.

The first episode, entitled The Birth of Nerv, is pretty much an Eva fan's dream. Think of twenty minutes of answers about NERV's past. That's what this episode is. While extremely weird in the fact that the usual slow moving show goes into ultra fast gear in this episode, it comes off as pretty well. Some of the highlights of this episode include our first look at SEELE, and the death of a recurring character.

In the following episode, At Least Be Humane, we finally get some well deserved Asuka development. It seems that her extremely rude and arrogant persona is the result of her insane mother who killed herself while Asuka was a young child. In the present times, Asuka is going off the deep end following humiliating defeats by the angels time and time again. Things get even worse as a pheonix like angel effectively 'rapes Asuka's mind'. By the end of the episode we get to see Rei kicking ass, although Asuka's really lost it.

The final and best episode on the DVD is entitled Tear. The 16th angel, which resembles a double helix arrives and immediately starts fusing itself with Rei and Unit 00. As a final attempt to save Shinji and everyone else, Rei commits suicide by self-destructing Unit 00. However, as always is the case in Eva, things aren't always the way they seem as Rei ends up coming out of the explosion virtually unharmed. I won't spoil it for you here, but you will finally learn the truth about Rei by the episode's end.

Three great episodes leading to the finale. These episodes contain a lot of build up to a climax, with the Lance, Eva series, SEELE, etc... but don't expect them to have any relevance in the ending. Probably the only big fault with the episodes on this volume, they build up to something that never comes.
