Disney is putting together a deal to turn the classic TV cartoon UNDERDOG into a live-action feature. The story will center on a diminutive hound named Shoeshine who gets superpowers after a lab accident. When he's adopted by a 12-year-old boy, the two form a bond around the shared knowledge that Shoeshine is really Underdog.

Jay Polstein and Spyglass Entertainment's Roger Birnbaum, Gary Barber & Jonathan Glickman will produce. The script was written by by Joe Piscatella and Craig A. Williams.

Gary Barber said in a statement, "Anything where you have a dog in that superhero context, that's appealing on a global basis."

The companies hope to begin filming at the start of 2006 in Canda.

UNDERDOG was created by Buck Biggers and Chet Stover. It ran on TV from 1964 until 1973.

Anything where you have a busty woman in that superhero context, that's appealing on a global basis.
Anything where you have a banana in that superhero context, that's appealing on a global basis.
Anything where you have a mindless movie producer making a movie in that superhero conext, that's appealing on a global basis. Unfortunately the globe is full of stupid people aching to see mindless dribble loaded with CGI and nostalgia.

Why Underdog?? And now he's adopted? I guess we were due for another boy and his dog feature. Since they are going nostalgic, might as well bring back Tennesee Tuxedo and his pal Chumly, at least it would be the first talking walrus movie. Almost seems like anyone can get a movie greenlit today.

I'm pretty sure Dante wrote about a circle of Hell specifically reserved for all the names listed in this article. Or at least I can hope.

Appealing on a Global basis? Did he really say that? He should've said something like "they'll really eat this movie up in SE asia." It would've at least been funnier.

I would prefer Krypto in one of the new Superman movies.. Kryptos cartoon is cool--the voice is Fry from Futurama.

And in SE asia it would be like being attacked by the ghost of dinner.
