NEVERENDING Will Reboot

The 80's children fantasy getting reworked.

There may be some truth to the possibility that The NeverEnding Story is never going to end. Or to be more precise, a new NeverEnding story will replace the old one. Warner Bros. and a pair of top-tier production banners are in the early stages of a reboot of the 1980s children's fantasy classic.

The Kennedy/Marshall Co. (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Leonard DiCaprio's shingle Appian Way are in discussions with Warners about reviving the 25-year-old franchise with a modern spin. The studio recently acquired rights to the property, clearing the way for a potential remake.

The new pic -- which original producer Dieter Geissler also will produce and Sarah Schechter and Jesse Ehrman will oversee for Warners -- will examine the more nuanced details of the book that were glossed over in the first pic.

Plot Concept: Born out of a German-language novel by Michael Ende, the film centers on a boy named Bastian Balthazar Bux who discovers a parallel world in a book titled "The NeverEnding Story." As the boy, a loner, delves deeper into the book, he increasingly finds his life intertwined with the plot of the novel, in which a hero in the land of Fantasia must save the universe on behalf of an empress.

Wolfgang Petersen directed and Neue Constantin produced the original for Warners, which earned a respectable $20 million when it was released in 1984. The film has had a long life on home video and an even larger influence on popular culture, prefiguring Harry Potter and other present-day children's fantasies.

A sequel directed by George Miller came out in 1990 and earned $17 million; a third movie followed in the U.S. in 1996 but quickly went to video. Those familiar with the project emphasize that it is in its early stages and that writers have not been attached.

I saw this in the theaters as a kid and have never seen it since.  Does it even hold up? Maybe a remake is a good idea for this one.

I saw the sequel in the theaters as a kid and have seen it since.  The sequel did not hold up.

This was the first movie I ever watched on a VCR.  VCR rentals had just become available in my small town and my dad rented this along with a ninja movie and Dirty Harry I think.  We started with Neverending Story, as I dont think I was allowed to watch Dirty Harry at that age.  I did get to watch the ninja movie, which turned out way more violent than Dirty Harry.

I'm sure I will be disappointed in a remake.

The 80's remake hater, me, say it seems like such a classic to me and the FX are perfectly fine for today's kids. I personally see no reason for a remake. However it does fit one of my Reasons for a Remake Rules of Thumb: it is adapted from a novel that a new creative team might find new insights from and emphasis different things that the older version didn't.

It's about time someone remade this film. When I was a kid I enjoyed the first but I did see it again years later, I tried watching the second and third films but the story and acting were horrible.

Treat this with respect and go on location to the same place where they did LOTR. It should also get the same treatment, it needs to be believible and real. Only up to a point, but on the other hand CGI does need to be in it.

Focus on the book and the original to get it right. It will go along way,  fans will flock if it is done right.

I have seen the original like three times, and it gets more and more dated everytime I see it. A remake doesn't sound all that bad, especially now that Harry potter is done, and there hasn't really been a suitable childrens fantasy that has taken it's place. Come to think of it, I would also like to see The Dark Crystal be remade.

I first read the book back in 5th grade, now even as an adult its still my all-time favorite.  I'd love a remake just b/c i love the story so much.  but i really hope that they do the 2nd 1/2 of the book which is the best part by far and was completely left out of the movie.  it either needs to be 3 hours long LotR style or broken into 2 movies.  otherwise they'll lose the richest parts, and it'll be a dissapointment for me at least.  done right i'll be there opening weekend, done wrong (like the hideous original sequals) and it'll just break my heart

I always thought the title was false advertising.  The movie only ran 102 minutes, at which point, the story ended.
