New 1-18-08 Update & Site Found

I don't consider this news but I'll publish it as a place to share your ideas about this upcoming movie from JJ Abrams. I'm curious on your thoughts on this one because of all the viral marketing involved. Apparently, there's a new site launched in connection with the slusho.jp site which has been confirmed to be connected with Abrams' 1-18-08 movie. The new site is called Tagruato.jp and it may be connected with a new updated photo at the official site from Paramount. The new photo appears to be a Japanese chef holding a pizza. If you move the pic left to right a few times with your mouse, it will turn over to reveal a message in Japanese which translates to a recipe.

Thank you for checking us out! We are introducing this week's tasty one dish. Make sure you eat it cold!

* Skinless chicken breast - 2, cut in halves
* SÅmen noodles - 10 oz.
* Watercress - 1/2 cup cut into small strips
* Turnip - 1/2 cup, thinly sliced
* Shiitake Mushrooms - 1/2 cup
* Chicken stock - 1/3 cup
* Sake - 2 tbsp.
* Sugar - 1/2 tsp.
* Deep Sea Nectar - 1 pinch

In a small saucepan, stir together 1/3 cup water, chicken stock, sake, and sugar. Chill it until it becomes cold. Grill the chicken breast on both sides for about 8 minutes, and then chill. Boil the noodles for about 3 minutes, and then run under cold water until chilled. Mix the watercress, radish, and mushrooms into the sÅmen. Slice the chicken thinly and arrange on top of the sÅmen mix. Just before you serve, put the deep sea nectar in the sauce and pour over the noodles generously.

Go Go Delicious Chef!

So here's my question. Do these viral marketing sites work for you? Do you find them fun? Could you care less? The reason I ask you these questions is because as far as I can tell, these connections are something most audiences wouldn't have a clue about without news sites publishing the information first. I understand that the "Slusho" drink has made an appearance in JJ Abrams' Alias show at least once from previous reports but I'm still curious on why these sites are popping up in connection to the upcoming monster movie when so little is known about the project itself. The only thing we've seen for sure is the highly popular trailer earlier this summer and a few vague set photos. How Paramount and Abrams expects people to connect that trailer with the slusho and tagruato sites and for what reasoning is something that I've been questioning. Will it make a difference? Is Slusho, Tagruato and this recipe above somehow important or just something to talk about? I suppose if it's just something to talk about, then they are succeeding.  After all, the news sites are publishing it...Warner Bros has launched countless Dark Knight viral marketing sites as well so it should be noted that other studios are on board this type of advertising as well.

What are your thoughts?

*YAWN!* You mean this movie hasn't gone direct to dvd yet? I thought it was supposed to be out on DVD last Tues. :D

There is something very ominous about that Slusho site. A reoccuring point throughout it is that it is made with a "secret ingredient" taken from the ocean floor. Also, the site says that the woman who first sought this "secret ingredient" disappeared at sea and was never heard from again......

It's fun.... your right that it is not for everyone, but for others it is interesting... like he easter eggs on DVDs.... some people hunt for every one, others know they are there and never even bother to look for them. It depends on your personality.

I think most people loose interest because it's being dragged out. If it was done with a shorter time span, closer to the actual release of the film it would hold everyone's interst and have a nice build up to the release. Unfortunately I think most people feel like "daforce"

It's more fun when there's more to it; 3 months away and these sites just seem like fluff so far. I realize not everyone has the time and money to create an ARG like The Beast, but the amount put out seems too small, too soon, and too poorly done... imo.

I think that it's interesting, that being said, there needs to be something there for us to do, i.e. puzzles, riddles, some other sort of mental exercise, or else we are just going to another website that, as of right now, doesn't serve a purpose. Also, I like run-on sentences.

Heh. I had the 1-18-08.com site open to check out the new picture and recipe, then forgot to close it. After about 5 minutes, a monstrous roar played. And FWIW, I love this kind of stuff. Transformers did some great similar things with the sectorseven.org site. Just wish I had more time to mess around with the Ethan Haas sites.

I’ve always liked original and entertaining ways to catch the audience attention to any product, but I can’t help but think that this sort of thing could easily backfire if not done properly. This flick is a big mystery, down to the movie title. We don’t know what to expect (at least not with absolute certainty) and so far this viral campaign hasn’t filled too many blanks. And I agree with Wiseguy that it’s been dragged out and starting to loose its appeal. Unless they come up with something more interesting closer to the date, 1-18-08 may be a bit too far away for this to keep working. I know that the whole idea IS to make people speculate so they talk about this movie and make them curious, but if the hype is build too high and the flick doesn’t deliver it, it could do it more harm that good. We all have seen more than one nice and rather entertaining movie get trashed in the box office and reviews because people came to expect too much of it. Or, in short: Snakes on a Plane.

The last ingredient..."Deep Sea Nectar". That must be the "secret ingredient" also found in the Slusho??? Was that the same secret ingredient in The Stuff? ;) (to anyone who remebers that movie!)

I had heard that this site is also part of the viral marketing for the movie: http://www.jamieandteddy.com/
