Via the official STAR WARS website, Lucasfilm has announced that five new chapters in the STAR WARS: CLONE WARS micro-series of animated shorts are in development. The five new episodes will air on the Cartoon Network starting March 21, 2005 and run consecutively for five nights. As was the case with the first 20 installments of the series, the additional CLONE WARS chapters will be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky.
What separates these five new chapters from the others is the length of the episodes. Whereas the first 20 episodes of CLONE WARS were just three minutes long, each of the five new episodes will run 12 minutes in length. When tallied, the new season of CLONE WARS episodes will amount to the same screentime as the first 20 shows.
All that is known about the story direction for the new chapters is that the Separtist commander General Grievous will return to plague the Jedi in their battle for control over the Galactic Republic. The episodes will lead directly into the set-up for EPISODE III which opens in theaters two months after Chapters 21-25.
"Genndy thoroughly enjoyed the collaborative relationship we built with Lucasfilm during the production of the first CLONE WARS episodes, and is terribly excited now to be entrusted with furthering the storyline and working with such popular and enduring characters," comments Jim Samples, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Cartoon Network Worldwid. "This will truly be a 'must-see' for STAR WARS fans and animation lovers."
