It didn't take long for Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures to show off their new Godzilla. Mere months after announcing their plans to bring the classic monster back into theaters summer 2012, ComingSoon is reporting that Legendary has revealed new art of the creature at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Courtesy of the design work by Talking Dog Studios, you can check out the full body pic by clicking on the head shot down below.

New Godzilla design

Development on the latest take of Toho's creation is still an ongoing affair, with no writer or director yet attached. As said above, the studio is pointing towards a tent pole release in 2012 so expect some announcements soon. Legendary Pictures has said it intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible.

Does that match up with this new design? Sound off below.

Basically they took his current look and just made him beefer, a wider neck, yellow eyes and his tail now ends in a point.  Its Godzilla on performance enchancers.

His best moment was dispatching Sony's torrid '97 version like a scrub wrestler against Goldberg in 10 seconds flat in Godzilla: Final Wars, and I hope Emmerich watched it as that scene alone should have made him constipated in his sleep.  Toho waited years to wipe that mess and probably smiled ear to ear.

Looks better than the crappy 97 version which made him look like a T-Rex. He looks a bit more like the old Godzilla

To me, the 98 version made him look more like a giant iguana than anything.  Other than a pussy that is...

I love what I see in this!  I LOOKS like Godzilla!  It has originality while still keeping reference to what it's supposed to be...something the 98 failed at.  And apparently they're keeping his blue atomic breath weapon...iconic!  I can't wait!

Not enough for me to opine. Concept to film is a long road, I'll wait.

Although I agree that the 98 film version was lackluster and not a great look I still enjoyed the movie. Hey, a giant lizard rampaging through NYC or anywhere for that matter with lots of mayhem and destruction makes for a fun couple of hours, usually. I especially liked the helicopter chase scene.

The Emmerich movie was its own thing.  I was always fine with Godzilla's makeover for that movie because of that.  It just wasn't that good.

I think this Godzilla makeover looks pretty good.

I'd say i have had enough Godzilla after 1997. It left a bad taste in my mouth. They will have to bring it and have some bad@ss trailers (if it gets made) for me to even think about going to see it.

wolfmanX 7/27/2010 5:06:48 AM

OH HELL YEAH. I WILL ALWAYS BE A GODZILLA FAN NO MATTER HOW CHEESY IT IS. AND THIS LOOKS HOT. I CANNOT WAIT BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS BIG G IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ME SO HAPPY ME HAPPY LONG LONG TIME. XD

Muenster 7/27/2010 5:24:40 AM

I was just thinking... One of his other weapons should simply be his roar. Think about it... A 500 foot tall creature that can roar would create VERY powerful gW ordered 194db soundwaves. These soundwaces would create sustained shockwaves that would cause ruptured internal organs and the destruction of numerous types thin manmade rigid structures.

I think Godzilla should be so damned scary and powerful that the only thing humans could possibly do to save themsselves from his wrath is just get the hell out of the way while he destroys another creature, a city, or other manmade thing that offended him. In fact the human end of the story should be one of survival as civilization is smashed all around  them. After attempting to nuke a radioactive monster the humans come to the realization that there is nothing they can do except run away amidst the anarchy and confusion caused by thier hubris and over reliance on technology to solve all their problems. If there is another creature involved they should just be happy that Godzilla, despite his destructive powers and ill temper is a defender of the earth first, then it's inhabitants.

Other than great FX the '97 US movie was awful for me. How can a giant iguana smash through Manhattan  and as far as was ever mentioned nobody was killed or even injured? It was all too comedic for the event. How could something that huge hide from the military when it leaves giant holes of destruction in its wake? Even the Mayor Roger Ebert lookalike wanted to move people back onto the devastated island immediately after they thought Iguanazilla was dead. No likey.

Hopefully they get it right in this version. Like Muenster stated, Godzilla is like a force of Nature. You just get out of his way and hope for the best.

Not much to go on, but I'm game for a new Godzilla. What I'd really love to see is a big screen take on Ultraman.
