Warner Bros. Pictures has revealed the international trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The new trailer is the same version as last month's Japanese trailer but with English-language dialogue featured within it. You can check it out as our Mania Video on the homepage or can check it out here.

This sixth installment stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Jim Broadbent, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Timothy Spall, David Thewlis, Julie Walters, David Bradley, Jessie Cave, Frank Dillane, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, Helen McCrory, Natalia Tena, Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Bonnie Wright. Director David Yates (Order of the Phoenix) was once again behind the camera, based on a screenplay by Steven Kloves.

Plot Summary: Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn’t counted on Romilda Vane's chocolates! And then there's Hermione, simpering with jealously but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will hit standard and IMAX theaters July 17, 2009.

Really liked the trailer, but I'm tired of the CHOSEN ONE already.  I don't remember that being said so much in the other movies.  Why suddenly now is it such a big deal?  Or should I say, why is he just now being called that?

Almost, you haven't read the books I take it?

Like the films vs. books, they've cut a lot of material out of the film versions.

One of those examples is the prophecy that you hear at the end of Order of the Phoenix. Since they chose not to have more of a conversation about the prophecy between Dumbledore and Harry at the end of the 5th movie, a lot of non-reader fans may not understand the Chosen One references in the trailer for this one.

Hopefully, they'll explain the prophecy a bit more in terms of being the chosen one in this sixth installment for fans who haven't read the series yet.

Here's the prophecy though..

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches,

Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies,

And the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not,

And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives,

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies
- Order of the Phoenix, ch 37, The Lost Prophecy

also, Dumbledore explores how it's Voldemort's fault that Harry is the "chosen one"

as Voldemort went after Harry himself, he ends up marking Harry as being the one to defeat him

there's that brief debate Harry has with Neville Longbottom possibly being the chosen one as well

the nature of this prophecy (and Voldemort's reaction to it) is taken very much from Greek drama, i.e. Oedipus Rex, where we hear a prophecy, get it completely wrong, and go about fulfilling it through our own actions

Actually, Jarrod, in anticipation of the movie, I am re-reading the series (I just started book 7 this morning) and am surprised at how much really did make it into the movies.  As I was watching the movies and trying to remember the books, it seemed as though there were many omissions and changes, but in re-reading, I don't think there were as many as I had previously thought.  As I finish each book, I am struck again at how good the books are. Extremely entertaining.

But will Dumbledore be gay in the films, that is the question.

violator14 4/10/2009 4:20:57 PM

Dumbledore is a lazy ass old man who is too lazy to defeat Voldemort himself, so he hires and trains harry while he secretly feels him up here and there. Who knows what kind of spells he puts on these kids while no one is looking. These Books are SICK! Sick i tell ya!

Watch it Hanso, you'll make all the little fanboys cry.

StarlightGuard 4/10/2009 5:04:37 PM

hanso's got a point

truthfully, I don't think Rowling herself would push for it to be so obviously stated, and I know Warner Bros wouldn't want to risk offending people

there's also those that may push for the outing of Dumbledore in the movie...

but, frankly, I think the most obvious way of going about this is one that never mentions the dreaded "g-word," but I'd say there is the possibility that Harry would ask Dumbledore in that final sequence at Platform 9 3/4 why Dumbledore didn't deal with Grindelwald sooner, he'd probably say something like "because I loved him...." or something to that effect

that would probably be the so called "safest" way of doing it, keeping Rowling's vision honest while keeping the whole scandal down to one sentence to keep the Christians at bay

personally, I hope they do it....these right wing nuts I have to deal with need a cold dose of reality....hell they banished Harry Potter from my former high school, and my dad used to joke "better not read those, they'll come after you!"

hell my cousin and her mom also weren't afraid to thump their Bibles when it came to protesting Disney over Ellen in the 90's...

I tell you, these people are crazy...

Yes Jarrod, I'm not reading the books until all the movies are out.  That way I won't be dissapointed in the movies.  But thanks.  I do remember them saying that in the last movie, well something like it, but teh CHOSEN ONE idea wasn't very pronounced.

JarrodSarafin 4/11/2009 7:47:08 AM

Hah. I'm about to do the same, fft5305. Just finished Lord of the Rings and finishing up the very detailed index today. I'll likely restart the Potter series tomorrow.

As with most book-to-movie transfers, some material doesn't make the cut that the fans really want in there. As popular as Spielberg's Jurassic Park is, there were quite a few fans not happy with some of the cuts from the novelized version.

And of course the same with Rowling's series. I'm fine with some of them but set against other cuts. For one example, the cutting of the end of Goblet (war of words between Dumbledore and Fudge) and the cutting of the end of Order (the prophecy explanation felt too rushed as well). It's the rush scenes which bother me at times because it almost feels like the reader has to explain what just happened to the fan who loves the movies but haven't read the books. I know they had to cut some characters but I wish they showed Dobby at least once per movie as well..even for a minor scene that takes 30 seconds at most.
Same goes for Fleur and Bill being included.

That said, I have enjoyed the movies. As with most fans of the series, I just have to put them into a different level of enjoyment.

And yep Almost, I understand. I know a lot of movie fans who will read the series after the movies come out. Makes for discussions to be limited at times without spoiling things but since the Chosen One was at least brought up(however briefly) in the fifth film, I put it up above.
