The Hobbit arrives in theaters December 14th, 2012.

The Official word on The Hobbit: From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes three films based on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. The trilogy of films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.  Returning cast members from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy also include Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, and Andy Serkis as “Gollum.”  The international ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Billy Connolly, Luke Evans, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.

The screenplay for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro.  Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.

Under Jackson’s direction, all three movies are being shot in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Additional filming, as with principal photography, is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and its successive installments are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing, being handled by MGM.

Oh, HELL YES! I can't WAIT!!!

Wiseguy 9/19/2012 8:44:28 AM

I just can't get as excited for this as I was for LOTR. Plus too many films high on my radar like Life of Pi and Cloud Atlas before this. Maybe a week or two before this drops my anticipation level will rise but til then it remains middling

I think I am anticipating the 48fps in 3D format more than anything else about the film.

Btw it looks simply awesome so I'm sure it won't disappoint

jedibanner 9/19/2012 8:44:29 AM

When fun and adventure can be seen on screen like this, can't ask for better.

Never read the HOBBIT, but I can tell that for this part one, it will be alot of fun just getting to know all the different dwarves and watching them interact with each other. Especially since we've only really seen one dwarf, Gimli, ever from these movies. That will be the "fun" of this movie for me I think. Part 2 & 3 will be much more epic and action packed as it will bring on the rest of Middle Earth and amazing scenes w/ the elves, other creatures, & Smaug I'm sure!

SarcasticCaveman 9/19/2012 8:48:04 AM

YES!  Looks AWESOME...adventure and comedy - overall looks a lot more light hearted than LOTR, which it is supposed to be.  Can't wait!

dojen1 9/19/2012 9:33:19 AM

Fans of "Captain America" may not find it interesting that Thorin is played by the actor who played the Nazi spy who killed kindly old Professor Erskine (Stanley Tucci) in that film.

SO looking forward to this.

twomcs 9/19/2012 10:45:17 AM

wildwestie 9/19/2012 10:56:00 AM

momitchell7 9/19/2012 2:33:51 PM

Wise... really? You're more excited about Life of Pi and Cloud Atlas over this? Oh, and I just read Higgy's comment as I was writing this. Different strokes, I guess.
