A few days after showing screenshots from John Carter, Disney and Apple iTunes have unleashed a new poster from the adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book. Check out the poster and the photos down below and sound off with your thoughts. The fantasy adventure will star Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Daryl Sabara, Polly Walker, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church and Willem Dafoe. Pixar director Andrew Stanton is leading at the helm, based on a screenplay he wrote with fellow writers Mark Andrews and Michael Chabo.

Plot Concept: "John Carter" is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

John Carter arrives in 3D/2D/IMAX theaters March 9, 2012.

I have high hopes for this. I have fond memories of reading this many years ago and re-reading it when I got my e-book reader (because it was free).  What I've seen of the movie so far looks good, but we've been fooled before.

I'm with you lusiphur. This is actually my second most anticipated film of 2012 behind only The Avengers. I thought that first trailer was just awesome, the f/x look top notch, the books are amazing and even though they've made some changes it's nothing that gives me any apprehensions thus far.

Stanton has been terrific with all his Pixar films so that gives me even higher hopes that this will be magnificent. I can't wait for this

I really want this film to work, but why does it just look cheesy?  I really, really hope not.  I was a fan, as a kid, of the series.  In the poster, there is a red sky...where is the red sky in the promo shots?  Mars should have red, not blue skys.

I read that this cost $300 million to make.  I pray it is not Conan bad.  John Carter doesn't really look like what I'd imagined.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Not sure about this one...looks like a mixture of Dune and a yonger Conan type character...not sure and never read the book so, have no idea about what this is.

jedi:  It is a mixture of fantasy, epic space adventures, Tarzan/Conan and a little superman tossed in.  From the previews, it looks like they drew a bit from The Prince of Persia.

I'm guessing they are including the dog for merchandising purposes.  But, if I recall, he was in the books....just not so docile.

I am anticipating this film.  But, alas, I was one who was anticipating Cowboys and Aliens.

I'm also hoping this is good. I wanted Barsoom to look alittle more unearthly with a different colored sky or different lighting because it mostly looks like the American southwest If it is really good I'm also hoping the public will like it. Most of the story elements have been incorporated into so many other books and movies in the past 100 years and people might think its cliche.

Like everybody else, I badly want this movie to succeed...but I think the tharks are a little too skinny and Woola looks like a grub worm.

The poster looks like a sci fi paperback book cover from the 70s.  John Carter ranks second only to Tarzan when it comes to my childhood fantasy pulp heroes.  It is hard to imagine that in all the years (decades) that Edgar Rice Burroughs works of fiction have been around this will be the highest budgeted and faithful adaptions of his work.  I agree Wiseguy, this is my most anticipated movie, Avengers second.  I have high hopes that it does well and maybe leads to adaptions of his other works (Pellucidar, The Mucker, The Lost Continent).  What I would really love and pray some day gets made is a faithful adaption of the Tarzan series.  The Christopher Lambert film was great until Tarzan left the jungle, then the movie became a Merchant Ivory production of a period class war drama.  A true Tarzan movie needs to be filmed in more of a Raiders of the Lost Ark style with Tarzan kicking lots of ass (animal and human).  For all the grousing about Disney from some genre fans, it appears, based on the Marvel movies and the trailer for John Carter, that they are trying to do right by the source material.  I wish them and Stanton and Pixar much success.

JacenBlade there are rumors circulating that a new Tarzan adaptation is in the works. I even read a short synopsis a while back. I'm with you all the way, fingers crossed

I'm not sold on this until I see a full trailer.
