According to Variety, New Line Cinema has won a bidding war for the upcoming remake of Escape From New York.

The film will star Gerard Butler (300) and be produced by Neal Moritz.  The studio closed the deal on March 15, three days after CAA began shopping it to studios.

Butler would play Snake Plissken, the one-eyed convict who's charged with heading into the inescapable maximum security prison formerly known as Manhattan to liberate the U.S. president.  Kurt Russell played the role in the original film.

Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down) will write the script.

KJ's Take:  Say what you want about how this film shouldn't be remade, it's a classic, yadda yadda.  I never saw the original, I like the premise and it sounds like it has some good source material to draw from.  Did I mention I like the casting too?  Bring it on!

i think peoples in that position, Ithink about KJ, should have a minimum of movie knowledge...To do not have seen the first s unforgiven !! it s like one of guy who say he s a movie lover, and when i ask if he like sam peckinpah , he reply..Who ??? Now you don t have to be james bond anymore to get the feeling to see one new young actor takes your job...can happen s to everyone now... I have too much respect for kurt russel to agree on that project, it s too soon...maybe 10 years after

Yadda, yadda, yadda. This film shouldn't be remade. Nobody should be Snake Plissken but Kurt Russell.

I have a better idea. Flush this lousy remake down the toilet where it belongs. We can flush that Rear Window remake (Disturbia) when we're done. A better idea: Get Carpenter and Kurt Russell back and finish the trilogy. I want 'Escape From Earth'.

Um orfilms......I'm reading your slashfilm article on the Escape from New York...and NOWHERE do I see a copy of text to text.. VARIETY has this article and time posted. I notice there is no timestamp on your article other then saying "days ago". If you have issue with DMCA laws, you should go to the source of this article, Variety. Good luck though, slashfilm. Variety's lawyers will eat you alive.

DarkJedi, My article is original content: Read it, you are copying my article word for word. Go read the Variety article, it is nothing like the article I wrote. You are breaking copyright laws by reprinting copyrighted material. Please remove it.

It's called a PLOT Outline, Slashfilm. Copyright infringement belongs to source of the ownerships of Snake Plissken rights. Btw, Slashfilm. I'm seriously considering deleting your comments right now for being an idiotic spammer. You yourself are copying the following text from IESB who posted this one on Monday (yes, IESB puts timestamps on their articles unlike you) IESB on Monday 12th, 2007:Butler would play Snake Plissken, the one-eyed convict who's charged with heading into the inescapable maximum security prison formerly known as Manhattan to liberate the U.S. president. Consider yourself outed.

Cool, an iternet throwdown!!!!! Anywho, exfan you are really starting to piss me off, are you really one of those movie purists who is arogant enough to believe that if I don't like or know your favourite movies or directors that it in any way invalidates my opinion or makes you any more of an authority. I just saw 300, and I don't think I would care if they were remaking Mrs. Doubtfire, I would want to see Gerard Butler again... dude owned. If they have to remake EFNY than they couldn't pick a better Snake....

LOL Not much of an internet throw down...Slashfilm just got laughed out of the stadium by accusing Karl of copyright infringement of "text" when they themselves had the same plotline from yesterday copied from IESB's monday article. Madmaniac, I have to agree with exfan and dissagree with you and our News editor Karl. As much as I love Gerard Butlers performance....there reason to replace THE MAN Kurt Russell. In fact, in acts of defiance towards KJ and you who agree with him, I'm going to write this weekends column of our Mania Star Spotlight on THE MAN Kurt Russell. :-) Kurt Russell doesn't need to be replaced for playing Snake Plissken, Jack Burton or RJ MacReady.
